Pregnancy hormone and weight loss
By Austin Dacci, Dietetic Intern

pregnantQ: Recently, I saw an article online about using a hormone called HCG to lose weight. How does this work, and is it safe?

A: Great question! In order to find out about a new product, method, or drug, the best thing to do is research it. Here is what I came up with. Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a hormone most commonly associated with pregnancy. In fact, home pregnancy tests check for HCG in urine. When HCG is taken as a supplement, along with consuming a 500 calorie per day diet, it is theorized that the body will use stored fat tissue as its main fuel source, thus causing extra pounds to melt away. Additionally, HCG is also supposed to help suppress your appetite, so that you don't feel the hunger pains associated with such a low calorie diet. That sounds awesome doesn't it? Here's the problem. Anyone who consumes 500 calories a day will ultimately lose weight. A 500 calorie diet is extremely low and can be dangerous to follow long-term. In fact, 500 calories is not sufficient to provide enough energy for proper brain function. The American Medical Association released a statement in the 1960's (when the HCG therapy was first developed) that said, "continued adherence to such a drastic regimen is potentially more hazardous to the patient's health than continued obesity." The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a research study showing no significant difference in weight loss between patients given HCG or a placebo. Not only is HCG unsafe, but it is ineffective.

HCG does have medical uses; however weight loss is not one of them. The bottom line: If you want to lose weight in a healthy and effective way, you must practice good nutrition and exercise regularly. Healthy weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week following at least a 1,200 calorie diet. For more information on healthy weight loss, contact a Certified Personal Trainer and a Registered Dietitian.

Did you know? A UK Health & Wellness registered dietitian is available for private consultations. Our dietitian can help you meet your nutrition goals whatever they may be -- weight loss, lowering your cholesterol, or lowering your blood pressure. It's FREE for all UK employees, retirees, spouses and sponsored dependents. Compare that to the going-rate of $100 for a one-hour consult with a dietitian. What a value! recipeCURRIED QUINOA PILAF SALAD

This dish serves as a high fiber and low-fat side dish that is delicious hot as a pilaf or cold as a quinoa salad. Not only is quinoa high in protein, but the protein it supplies is complete protein, meaning that it includes all nine essential amino acids. This makes it a good choice for vegans concerned about adequate protein intake.

Ingredients:

· 1 cup uncooked quinoa
· 2 cups vegetable broth
· 1 tsp curry powder
· 1 tsp ginger
· dash salt
· 1/3 cup raisins
· 1/3 cup cashew pieces

Preparation:

Bring the vegetable broth to a boil and add the quinoa and spices. Cover and cook for 12 to 15 minutes, until quinoa is soft and fluffy. Stir in raisins and cashews.
