Countering the Effects of Sitting at a Desk All Day
Got a Desk Job? Does your job require you to sit for long periods of time? Now is the time to get up and get moving! The American Cancer society recently published a study about the effects of sitting and mortality rates.
We all know that physical activity is important. We may incorporate exercise into our day already. However, if we still spend great amounts of time sitting, we are at a greater risk than those who are more active during the day, according to the ACS.
Try these tips for staying active during your work day:
1. When the phone rings-stand up! You can talk standing up or even marching or swaying in place. Just doing hip circles can improve circulation and flexibility. 2. When you have to contact a co-worker in the same building, walk to his or her office! Why e-mail, call, or use instant messenger, when you could talk face-to-face? It is more personal and it gets you moving. 3. Next time your team needs a brainstorming session, walk and brainstorm at the same time! Inside or outside, walking can refresh a sitting body and get the creative juices flowing. 4. Instant recess! That's right -- get your office group together, play some music and dance, or take a quick stroll through the building collecting everyone for a 5-minute walk. Call a recess! 5. Take the stairs. You have heard it before, skip the elevator and take the stairs when you need to go up or down a flight. Climbing stairs engages different muscles than walking on a flat surface does. 6. Choose the farthest parking lot or garage. What? Don't fight for the best spot on campus? Choose a spot that gives you a longer walk in and out of your building. A short walk can help you leave your work-related stress behind at the end of the day, besides keeping you active. So, even if you have a desk job, finding ways to get up and move in addition to your regular fitness routine is beneficial to your health.
