Ask the Expert: Staying Motivated
Q: I am always excited to try a new workout program or class. But the excitement doesn't last long. I just can't seem to stay motivated. Do you have any tips? A: Motivation is something that is unique to each individual. What motivates me to stay active may not be what motivates you. So here are some general tips for staying motivated no matter who you are or what makes you tick:
-
Change it up. Doing the same workout over and over gets very stale very fast. Try making your Monday, Wednesday, Friday different from your Tuesday, Thursday workout. Then, after 6-8 weeks-change it all. Not only will this keep you motivated, but it will also help you keep from hitting a training wall.
-
Get with a group. Exercising by yourself can be relaxing-however, energy is contagious. When you exercise with others who are working toward their fitness goals-their motivation can rub off on you.
-
Find a challenge. Working-out is something that must slowly get more difficult to make progress. When those weights begin to fill light, start to use a bit heavier weights. Besides a challenging work-out, a fitness challenge can be very motivating. The Body Shop offers several fitness challenges through-out the year.
-
Healthy competition. Nothing motivates like trying to compete. Whether it's an organized sport or a challenge among friends, healthy competition can go a long way toward keeping you active.
