Face the Frost: Winter Workout Options and Safety Tips
By Tiffany Orcena, HFS, CSCS
Wintertime is fast approaching and the cold weather is creeping back into circulation. For some exercise enthusiasts, this is a welcome relief from the sunny summer scorchers we experience from May to September. For others, it means hibernation from the bitter wind and subzero temperatures. Whichever type you are, there are a few things you should know about exercising in a winter wonderland, and how you can stay fit-and stay safe-during those dreadful dreary days.
Here's what you should know about exercising in the cold: In inclement weather, the body has to work a lot harder to maintain a normal core temperature. Because of this increase in internal energy expenditure, fatigue is induced at a much quicker rate, thus lowering the ability to work at higher capacities. With the onset of fatigue, the ability to produce heat within the body declines and the muscles begin to cool. Cooler muscles = weaker muscles. Therefore, what may seem like an easy run in the summer sun will likely prove to be a more costly effort in a cooler climate. Don't beat yourself up over some decreased efficiency in your winter workouts. Read more.
