Nike Posts Strong 4Q Earnings

Nike posted better-than-expected results in the fourth quarter as strong footwear sales around the world offset higher costs. Nike earned $594 million for the period ended May 31. That's up from the $522 million in the fourth quarter of 2010. Revenue rose 14 percent to $5.77 billion. Revenue in North America, Nike's largest market, increased 22 percent to $2.1 billion as it sold more of its running, training and basketball products. More
Competitor Group's Rock 'n' Roll Series Expands to Scotland

Edinburgh has been announced as the first United Kingdom city to host a Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon event, it was announced this week. Competitor Group will take over the management of the city's April half-marathon, aiming to bring a 'festival like' atmosphere to the event. Over 20 local bands will play to the runners along a revised 13 mile route, with an as yet unconfirmed "world recognised" act headlining at the finish line. Scottish tourism officials hope that the changes to the Edinburgh event will see the number of participants more than double from 4,500 to nearly 10,000 in 2012. More

Tour of Utah Announces 2011 Route

All 409 miles of climbs, descents, twists, and turns of the six-day Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah were revealed today by event organizers. The sixth season for this professional cycling event will begin with a new uphill Prologue at Utah Olympic Park on August 9. There will be a combination of familiar terrain and fresh territory for the five stages, including a new circuit course in downtown Salt Lake City. The Tour of Utah culminates on August 14, with its signature mountaintop stage finish at Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort. More
SRAM Preparing for Possible IPO

SRAM has paid off its private equity investor, a step the company previously said it would make before going public. An updated prospectus filed with the Securities Exchange Commission last Friday indicated that SRAM refinanced its current credit facilities on June 7 in part to complete the buyout of Trilantic Capital Partners. SRAM paid Trilantic $575 million to regain the shares it owned in the company. More
Shimano, Pearl Izumi Combine Dealer Support Systems

As part of an ongoing synthesis of their business practices, Shimano and Pearl Izumi today announced a centralization of their trade ordering, support and communications systems. Effective July 5, United States dealers will now have streamlined points of contact for both brands, including a single account number, a single line of credit, and a single toll-free phone number for customer support. The restructuring, which has been in the making since Shimano bought Pearl Izumi in February, 2008, will result in the strengthening of the Soft Goods Division, located at Pearl Izumi headquarters in Colorado, and will also result in an investment in the Hard Goods Division at Shimano American headquarters in Irvine, CA.
Florida to Host New High-level Paddling Races

A new competition for paddlers announced on Monday by Canoe & Kayak magazine is expected to draw Olympic-caliber athletes and other skilled competitors to Southwest Florida waters this fall. The competition will include two races - one also designed for recreational paddlers - during the annual Calusa Blueway Paddling Festival, which is November 3-6 on the Sanibel Causeway. More than 150 kayakers, outriggers and Stand-Up Paddlers are expected to participate. More

Tour de 'Toona Cancels Two Stages

Tour de 'Toona officials said Monday logistical limitations have forced organizers to cancel two stages of this year's cycling event one week before it is to be held to ensure a safe, quality event for all competitors. The stages eliminated are next Wednesday's Hollidaysburg Circuit Race and next Friday's Martinsburg Circuit Race. The inability to finalize logistics with several municipalities as well as a shortage of volunteers over the holiday week forced the Tour to make the decision, officials said. More

Ben Delaney, long-time editor of VeloNews, has resigned and Competitor Group, Inc., the magazine's owner, has begun a search for a replacement, said Bouker Pool, CGI's senior vice president of marketing. Delaney, now in France, will lead the magazine's coverage of the Tour de France and will officially leave the magazine at the end of July.
