USATF Board to Continue Working on CEO Search

USA Track & Field

The USA Track & Field Board of Directors, at its scheduled meeting June 25-26 in Eugene, OR, will continue to work toward a resolution to its CEO search, the organization announced in a release this week. "We have yet to find situation where all the pieces fit for both the candidate and USATF," said search committee chair Steve Miller. "In Eugene our hope is to determine how we will move forward from a leadership perspective through the London 2012 Olympics." More

WTC Signs Deal with Marines to Sponsor 70.3 Championships

ICU Bans Dopers From Future Team Management Positions

The International Cycling Union (UCI) took another big step in the fight against doping, as it approved a new regulation forbidding convicted dopers from being able to work in team management in the future. It was one of the actions taken at the last day of the UCI's Management Committee meeting  in Maastricht, the Netherlands. More

Running USA has released the highlights from its 2011 National Runner Survey which assesses the demographics, lifestyle, attitudes, habits and product preferences of the running population nationwide. The survey, taken every two years, reflects "core runners", active adult participants who tend to enter running events and train year-round. ING Extends Hartford Marathon Sponsorship

The Hartford Marathon Foundation has announced the extension of the ING title sponsorship through 2012 for its signature event, the ING Hartford Marathon. ING has been the marathon's title sponsor since 2008.  During that time the marathon has become a major race event in New England, bringing more than 12,000 runners and 30,000 spectators to the city of Hartford each October. The 2011 event will take place on October 15. More

 

Canada Provides Marketing Funds for Grand Prix Cycling Events in Quebec

Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, this week announced the awarding of $1,620,000 in funding for the 2011 and 2012 editions of the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec and Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal to promote the events outside of the province. "The Government of Canada believes in the importance of supporting the promotion outside the province of these elite sporting events, which will help extend the reach and influence of Québec and Montréal around the world," stated Minister Lebel. Fuji, Kestrel Teams Bring Tri Wars to PHLYTRI 

 

The Philadelphia-based Fuji and Kestrel brands are bringing their Tri Wars, a season-long competition pitting Fuji sponsored pros against Kestrel sponsored pros, to the seventh Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon on June 26.  Philadelphia Insurance Companies has added a $6,000 bonus prize for the team with the best combined time at race.  "Philadelphia Insurance Companies is proud to be working with Philadelphia-based Fuji and Kestrel brands to bring some of the sport's top athletes to our hometown race," said Jamie Maguire, Chairman and CEO, Philadelphia Insurance Companies. 

 

Kentucky Derby Festival Races Raise Record $392K for Charities

The Kentucky Derby Festival says charitable organizations that took part in the 2011 Derby Festival Marathon and miniMarathon presented by Walmart on April 24 will receive a record $392,711 for their respective causes - up from $255,033 in 2010. The American Cancer Society's Louisville DetermiNation Team, which raised $55,929 in 2011 - up from $13,000 in 2010 - was named "Charity of the Year" by the Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation. More

Buffalo Springs' Greer Featured in Local Newspaper

Mike Greer, whose Buffalo Springs Lake Triathlon will celebrate its 22nd anniversary this weekend, begins growing a beard at the beginning of every June and doesn't shave it off until the night of the awards ceremony following his event. He also switches from peppermint- to spearmint-flavored gum on race day, and he's watched the race while riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle for as long as he can remember. Although slowed this year following a cycling accident, Greer plans to be out front again. American Idol Winner Announces Birmingham Fitness Weekend

Ruben Studdard, the former American Idol winner, is lending his name and participation to a Birmingham, AL fitness event that includes a marathon and a half-marathon. The Ruben Studdard Celebration Weekend is set for November 18-20 and will include a fitness festival, a 5-kilometer run, the Ruben Studdard Half-Marathon and the Ruben Studdard Marathon. More

 

Snickers Marathon Bar Marathon Donates $20K to Hospice

The annual Snickers Marathon Bar Marathon on March 5 was the biggest so far, allowing the Albany (GA) Marathon Board of Directors to donate $20,000 to the Willson Hospice House from the race's proceeds. A ceremonial check was presented at a news conference Tuesday morning at the hospice house. "This check brings the total donations for the first five years of the marathon to $95,327.77," said Lisa Riddle, race director for the Albany Marathon. More

Mike Giraud has been hired by Blue Competition Cycles as the company's product development specialist. Giraud joins Blue after spending the past five years as the director of cycling programs at the A2 Wind Tunnel in Charlotte, NC, where he oversaw all aspects of the tunnel's bike program.
