New York City, New Jersey to Host Ironman U.S. Championships in 2012

Bringing the nation's biggest triathlon to the nation's biggest city turned out to be an organizational feat comparable to the Ironman itself. When it was officially announced Tuesday that the Ironman U.S. Championship would be contested in New York and New Jersey in August 2012, it capped seven years of planning with the knowledge that the 140.6-mile course could not involve closing any New York City streets. USA Pro Cycling Challenge Route Features Big Mountain Climbs

The state's name isn't in the inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge, but the route that was announced this week shows the August 22-28 stage race has Colorado all over it. "The key factor in the overall competition is altitude," said race director Jim Birrell of Medalist Sports, the race producer, which also does the Tour of California among other races. The highlight of the race will be Stage 2 from Gunnison to Aspen on August 24. Billed "the Queen's Stage," it will feature ascents over 12,126-foot Cottonwood Pass and 12,095-foot Independence Pass, the highest known climbs in international cycling. More
McCourt Divorce Settlement Could Result in LA Marathon Sale

The Dodgers are not the only Los Angeles sports institution facing an uncertain future because of the protracted divorce proceedings between Frank and Jamie McCourt. Frank McCourt also owns the Los Angeles Marathon. The McCourts are divorced but have not settled on how to divide their assets. In the meantime, Major League Baseball has taken over the day-to-day operation of the Dodgers and is investigating the finances of the team "and related entities," including the marathon. Frank McCourt is struggling to meet the Dodgers' payroll, and if the Dodgers are put up for sale - whether by McCourt, the divorce judge or MLB - the marathon could be too. More

Competitor Group Acquires SBR Triathlon Series

Competitor Group, Inc. (CGI) announced Wednesday the acquisition of the SBR Triathlon Series. Entering its fifth year, the two-event series of USAT-sanctioned sprint triathlons kicks off this weekend in New York's Harriman State Park. The second event, scheduled for August 13 will be rebranded as part of CGI's TriRock Triathlon Series - TriRock New York presented by SBR. "We are excited to bring the TriRock Series to the greater New York metro area and joining forces with a retail partner like SBR is a natural fit," said Scott Dickey, President of CGI. More
USAT, USOC, UCCS Partner on Elite Triathlon Academy

The nation's best up-and-coming triathletes will practice at the Olympic Training Center while studying at Colorado-Colorado Springs in a program expected to launch in the fall with financial support from USA Triathlon, the U.S. Olympic Committee and UCCS. Five junior triathletes were selected Tuesday for the inaugural class of the Elite Triathlon Academy, in which they'll train with the OTC's top triathletes, have access to a full-time coach, receive a scholarship to UCCS and live in an apartment complex near the campus. New Mexico Resort to Host Collegiate Mountain Bike Nationals

The US Collegiate Mountain Bike Nationals will be held at New Mexico's Angle Fire Resort in 2011 and 2012 per a new two-year agreement with the resort. After unanticipated difficulties forced the original venue in Davis, West Virginia, to step down this spring as the event's host, Angel Fire agreed to step in and offer up its bike park for the three days of collegiate national championship racing. Both the 2011 and 2012 events will be held on their originally scheduled weekends of October 28-30, 2011, and October 26-28, 2012. More
GU Energy Labs Expands with Move to Former Clif Bar Building

GU Energy Labs, will move its corporate operations to a new facility on June 13, offering 50 percent greater square footage. The new Berkeley, CA office is the former headquarters of Clif Bar, Inc., another sports nutrition company with Berkeley roots. Along with the increase in space, GU is expanding production capacity by 50 percent, with room to accommodate significant additional growth. More
New Jersey Marathon Considers Format Changes for 2012

Newly minted New Jersey Marathon Executive Director Joe Gigas will know by July whether the format of the annual run will change as a result of the growing popularity of the races.
Gigas said in an interview last week that by the end of June a decision will be made on whether to split the 13.1-mile half-marathon and 26.2-mile marathon, traditionally run on the same day. The two races drew upward of 12,000 runners on May 1. More
Marine Corps Marathon Opens Entry Transfer Program

The Marine Corps Marathon opened its transfer program Tuesday, an unusual process for a large race that allows registered runners who cannot participate this year to transfer their entries to others who want to run. Registered runners also can transfer to the Marine Corps Marathon 10K at no cost. New marathjon runners will be required to pay a $30 transfer fee. More

Missouri River Flooding May Force Changes to Missouri 340 Race

Scott Mansker, race director for the Missouri 340 kayak race, says that high river levels from rain have made the possibility of having the July 19-22l event on the Missouri River a no-go. Organizers are looking at a number of options including holding the race later in the summer or substituting a 100-mile race on the Kansas River. More
Parent Company Takes Over Columbus Marathon Title Sponsorship

Nationwide Better Health's parent, Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co., has agreed to take over the main sponsorship of what for the past four years has been the Nationwide Better Health Columbus Marathon and Half-Marathon. The event is set for October 16, weeks after Nationwide expects to finish spinning off and closing the five-year-old subsidiary, whose only sponsorship deal was with the race.
Carmichael Training Systems to Open Santa Ynez Center

Carmichael Training Systems will be opening the new Santa Ynez regional training center on the central coast of California on June 27. CTS will be hosting a number of cycling and triathlon training camps out of the new Santa Ynez center in 2011. The new facility will also be equipped to conduct physiological testing and 3D dynamic bike fits, while CTS professional coaches will be heavily involved in the local cycling and triathlon scene. River Flooding Alters Vancouver USA Marathon Course

The Columbia River is forcing runners in the first Vancouver USA Marathon to take a slight detour. With a With a short section of the course for the June 19 race currently under water, organizers are forced to make a slight change of course. Runners will need to leave the Columbia River waterfront trail near mile 23 and run for a couple of blocks on Columbia Shores Boulevard. More
