Joplin Half Marathon Changes from Race to Day of Caring

An e-mail sent to runners signed up for the June 11th Boomtown Days Half-Marathon in Joplin, MO announced that the event has been cancelled for 2011. But, event organizers are asking runners to show up for the event anyway. Here's what the e-mail says, "We are asking all runners (registered or not), race volunteers and sponsors to gather at the starting line, Memorial Hall at 6:30 am on June 11, for a Day of Caring.  We will hold a brief memorial service and then spread out into the community to provide assistance." More

 

Grandma's Marathon Contributes $6K to Red Cross

Grandma's Marathon is a making a $6,000 contribution to assist Red Cross relief efforts in the southeastern United States and Japan, following the recent natural disasters in those areas. Summerfest to Go Forward with Rock 'n' Sole Name

Milwaukee's Summerfest and the Competitor Group Inc. have ended the federal court battle over their dueling trademarks: Rock 'n' Roll vs. Rock 'n Sole. Through the settlement, Summerfest will be allowed to use the Rock 'n Sole name and trademark for the half-marathon and 10K races it is launching on July 10. Competitor Group, based in San Diego, had challenged the Rock 'n Sole name and logo as an infringement on its trademark for the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon series, which has grown to 23 races around the country.

Nick Wolda, president of The Woodlands Convention and Visitors Bureau, said there are no concrete numbers yet regarding the economic impact of Saturday's Memorial Herman Ironman Texas, but "word on the streets is that it was very good for business in terms of restaurants, shops." Wolda said the notoriety received from the event was exceptional, as 2,500 competitors visited from across the country and other nations. More

 

Ski to Sea Organizer Ready for the Challenges of 39th Edition

Peter Coy, the president of Whatcom Events and the race director of this weekend's 39th Ski to Sea relay in northwest Washington State, is interviewed by The Bellingham Herald about the upcoming 100-mile relay that starts on the slopes of Mount Baker and finishes in Puget Sound.  The race has attracted a sold out field of 500 teams. Each team consists of eight racers (two in the canoe leg) for the seven race legs - country ski; downhill ski/snowboard; running; road bike; canoe; mountain bike and kayak. More

Bolder Boulder Moves Start Line to Ease Race Day Traffic

The Bolder Boulder has had three finish lines in its 33-year history as one of America's biggest and most celebrated road races, but it has had only one starting line - until this year.

In a major departure from the course that had remained essentially unchanged since the first Folsom Field finish in 1981, the start has been moved three-quarters of a mile south on 30th Street. Runners will begin traveling north instead of south, and will run 1.35 miles before intersecting with the old course. Most of the new section is uphill. The change was prompted by an effort to make race morning more convenient for 50,000-plus participants and facilitate traffic flow. More

 

OC Marathon Plans Changes to Keep Runners On Course

OC Marathon officials plan to make changes to the course for next year to make the race easier to navigate, race officials have said. Race Director Gary Kutscher plans to hire more staff as guides for participants and will place more markers throughout the race as a way to combat any confusion people might have about the direction of the course. The changes are a result of a race official and two runners, one of which was the lead female runner, veering off course for the last three miles of the OC Marathon at the May 1 event. More

 

Orangeman Triathlon Gets San Juan Capistrano Approval

After initial push-back from the San Juan Capistrano City Council, the route of the 56-mile cycling leg of the September 25 Orangeman Triathlon is looking more likely to traverse San Juan Capistrano after all. After reviewing the new traffic management plan Tuesday night, the City Council voted 3-2 to allow 1,500 racers to speed through town so long as the route is approved by Caltrans and other agencies. More

Nation's Tri Signs Military Challenge Sponsor

The Nation's Triathlon has announced that Gryphon Technologies has signed on as the presenting sponsor for the 4th Annual Nation's Triathlon Military Challenge.  Registration has been extended for both active duty and veteran members of the military until July 31 to accommodate troops returning from Afghanistan as part of the planned July 2011 drawdown.  General registration is sold out.
