NYC Marathon Study Shows $340M Benefit to Local Economy
The New York Times
The ING New York City Marathon produces about $340 million in economic activity for the city, 25 percent more than it did in 2006, according to a new study produced by the New York Road Runners, which hosts the event. The stronger economic impact race mirrors growth in the race and the number of runners who come from overseas. The release of the findings comes weeks after the New York Police Department said it would charge organizers of the marathon and other "noncharitable athletic parades" that use the city streets for the cost of controlling traffic and other services associated with shutting down roads.
