New Puma CEO Wants Strengthened Sports Performance Products

Puma's CEO-in-waiting Franz Koch says the sportswear company will be strengthening the sports aspect of its product range, though not necessarily at the expense of its fashion segments. "We've neglected our sports performance segment recently, but we're going to change that," the 32-year-old told Financial Times Deutschland on Thursday at the firm's general assembly. He pointed out that Puma's sports products were "the roots of the company."  More 

 

Big Sur Marathon Reroutes Course Along Highway One

The unanticipated collapse of California's scenic Highway One, midway along the Big Sur International Marathon course, has prompted a new routing of the May 1 event. After several weeks of meetings, surveying and discussions, the modified course has been finalized for the 26th presentation. Typically a point-to-point run from Big Sur to Carmel, this year's race is an "out-and-back" course along Highway One beginning on the Carmel River Bridge near Rio Road, Carmel. More

Louisville, WTC Extend Ironman Louisville Agreement

The Louisville Sports Commission and World Triathlon Corporation announced Wednesday a five-year extension of their 2007 agreement that will continue the Ford Ironman Louisville through 2016. This year's race will be on August 28. Mayor Greg Fischer said that extending the agreement makes sense, noting that the event pumps $5.2 million annually into the local economy and emphasizes the importance of health and fitness. Boston Marathon Spectator Arrested for Knocking Down Runner

A rowdy Medfield spectator who allegedly jumped over steel barriers and "violently knocked down" a female Boston Marathon runner - all in an effort to reach a racing pal - will be summoned to court. After knocking down the runner near Mile 22, Brendan Quinn, 20, ran through the crowd to try to meet a friend running the 26.2-mile race, police said. The woman was helped to her feet by other runners before continuing on toward Cleveland Circle, police said. More

NBC Affliate Partners with Peachtree Road Race

The Atlanta Track Club has named NBC affiliate,11Alive (WXIA), the official television partner of the 2011 AJC Peachtree Road Race.  As the official television partner of the event, 11Alive will air live coverage of the 2011 AJC Peachtree Road Race from 7-8

a.m. on July 4.  11Alive will also air a Peachtree special the evening of July 4 that will feature a recap of the race as well as participant stories.

 

 

Grandma's, Twin Cities Offer $10K Bonus to Win Both Races

The Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, MN and the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon in Minneapolis-St. Paul, have teamed up to offer a bonus to any runner who can win the open titles of both races this year. Disneyland to Host New Tinker Bell Half Marathon

Disney officials announced this week that it will hold a new half marathon event geared for women in January at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA. The first Tinker Bell Half Marathon events are scheduled for January 27-29. Men are allowed to register, but the half marathon is mostly targeted for women. More 

 

UnitedHealthcare to Sponsor Providence Rhode Races

UnitedHealthcare has signed on as a sponsor of the 2011 Cox Providence Rhode Races. The announcement was made recently by Eident Sports Marketing, the official sports marketing agency of the Cox Providence Rhode Races. Now entering its fourth year, the Cox Providence Rhode Races Weekend will be held April 30- May 1 in Providence. 

 

New Orangeman Triathlon Faces Opposition to Bike Route

The inaugural Orangeman Triathlon, Orange County, CA's only half-distance race, may not pass through San Juan Capistrano as organizers had intended. The San Juan Capistrano City Council is hesitant to approve the route through town, because planners want to close Ortega Highway east of Avenida Siega, inconveniencing residents, as it's the only east-to-west arterial in the area. More

Karen Hughes White has been hired by Competitor Group, Inc. (CGI) as vice president of national sales, central region. White will be based in Dallas and report directly to John Smith, senior vice president of national sales at CGI. She previously served as managing director of sponsorship and sports properties for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

 

Chris Speyer, vice president of product and marketing for Raleigh America, has assumed the role of president of the Bicycle Products Suppliers Association, a position previously held by John Nedeau, vice president of OEM sales for SRAM.
