Competitor Group Buys Madrid Marathon, Expands RnR Series to Europe Competitor Group Competitor Group (CGI) today announced the acquisition of the Madrid Marathon at the IMG World Congress of Sports, creating the first international event in the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series. The acquisition enables CGI to develop its presence in additional markets outside of the U.S., creating an global endurance sports platform. The deal includes retaining the existing Madrid Marathon operations team, Elipse Iniciativas, to compliment CGI's marketing expertise. More Life Time Fitness, AEG Announce Leadville 100 Qualifying Races Business Wire Life Time Fitness and AEG have announced the Leadville Qualifying Series for the 2011 Leadville Trail 100 MTB Race. The three-race series will include races in New York, Nevada and Colorado. Each race will provide 100 qualifying spots to the LT100 with the spots being allocated partially on the basis of age-group performance and partly by lottery among finishers. Milwaukee Festival Race Name Challenged by Competitor Group

Summerfest may lose its Rock 'n Sole to the forces of Rock 'n' Roll in a federal trademark battle being fought over the name of the inaugural run in Milwaukee.
Competitor Group Inc., the company behind the expanding Rock 'n' Roll Marathon and Half Marathon series, initiated the fight through a cease-and-desist letter that directs Milwaukee World Festival Inc. to drop the Rock 'n Sole name for the half-marathon and 10K scheduled for July 10. More
Giro d'Italia Partners with Gran Frondo New York

Giro d'Italia, Italy's classic professional cycling race, will be an official partner of Gran Fondo New York. The partnership between the two races was forged based on the Italian cycling heritage of Gran Fondo amateur racing coming New York on May 8. The Giro d'Italia will present classic pictures of the race, official Giro merchandise and broadcast past stages of the race at the two-day expo at Roseland Ballroom in midtown Manhattan on May 6-7. B.A.A. Adds Summer 10K to Race Schedule

The Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) has announced the addition of a 10-kilometer road race this summer in Boston. The B.A.A. 10K, to be held on June 26, starting and finishing at Boston Common, expands the B.A.A.'s calendar to include one of the sport's most popular distances. The race will offer a prize purse of $30,000 for top finishers. More
Army Ten-Miler to Open Military Registration First

Army Ten-Miler race officials have announced that the 2011 race will have priority registration for all U.S. servicemembers and other runners who have participated in at least seven Ten-Miler races. About one-third of the total 30,000 race entries, the race's runner cap, will be reserved for this new priority registration program. Priority registration will open May 1. General registration will start on May 15. The race sold out in 36 hours last year. More
Pacific Sports Signs New Deal to Manage Long Beach Triathlon

Pacific Sports LLC has signed a five-year extension with Competitive Aquatic Supply to continue its management of the Long Beach Triathlon. Pacific Sports has managed the event for 10 years. "This is a relationship and race that we wanted to keep on our calendar, Pacific Sports President and CEO Jack Caress said. "The Long Beach Triathlon is a great sprint triathlon that benefits a wonderful charity."

Missoula Marathon Wins State Tourism Award

The Missoula Marathon was named Montana's Tourism Event of the Year at the 2011 Montana Governor's Conference on Tourism and Recreation held this week in Helena. Tourism award winners are selected for their outstanding contributions to Montana's tourism industry. The Missoula Marathon brought $1.3 million to the area during the 2010 event, nearly quadrupling in its first four years. More

Skip Gilbert, the former executive director of USA Triathlon, has joined New Zealand-based Times-7 Sport, a sport technical solutions provider, as the company's president and chief executive. Gilbert takes charge of the company's expansion into Canada, Mexico, South America, the Caribbean and the United States. More
Kevin Wulff will become CEO of Asics America Corporation on Friday when the current CEO Nobuo Oda retires. Wulff joined Asics as chief operating officer in August 2010 and added the president to his title in February.
Jeff Decker has been hired as race director for Twin Cities in Motion. Decker will oversee the growth of new events as well as manage the logistics and operations of the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon Weekend and additional TCM events throughout the year. He previously worked for the New York Road Runners where he served as senior manager of event management and logistics, as well as the transportation manager of the ING New York City Marathon.
Nicole Formosa, a reporter for Bicycle Retailer and Industry News, has been named the magazine's international editor. She will head up the magazine's global coverage including planning content for BRAIN's annual Taipei issue and European edition, and reporting from key international events like Eurobike, Taipei Cycle and Taichung Bike Week.
