Adidas Announces Plans to Reduce Environmental Footprint

Adidas AG on Tuesday announced a global strategy to reduce its environmental footprint by 15 percent by 2015. The effort touches every function of the footwear and apparel brand - from internal office operations to the amount of sustainable content in its shoes. A notable example is the company's commitment to use sustainbly produced cotton for all of its products by 2018. More 

 

Nike Posts Increase in 3Q Net Income

Nike Inc. said last week that its third-quarter net income rose five percent as its sales rose, but both its profit and revenue missed analyst expectations, and its shares fell in after-hours trading. Nike said it earned $523 million, or $1.08 per share, for the quarter that ended February 28. That's up from $497 million, or $1.01 per share, in the same quarter last year. Its revenue rose seven percent to $5.08 billion. More

Dave Monti of Race Results Weekly interviews Fleet Feet CEO Tom Raynor about his work in running specialty retail.  Fleet Feet is the largest franchiser of running specialty stores in the United States with 89 stores in 29 states.  The company had revenues of over $100 million in 2010, an increase from the prior year of 11.5%, and the first year that the company surpassed $100 million in sales. More

Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series Expands to Portland

The Competitor Group and the Portland Rose Festival announced this week that Portland will become home to the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series in 2012. The inaugural Rock 'n' Roll Portland Half Marathon will held on May 20, 2012. More

Zazzle Signs Sponsorship Deal with Bay to Breakers

Redwood City, CA-based Zazzle, which operates a web site that allows customers to design their own T-shirts, postage stamps, iPhone cases and plenty of other things, has agreed to a two-year title sponsorship of San Francisco's Bay to Breakers road race. "When we heard this was an opportunity, we didn't even hesitate," said Zazzle co-founder and chief product officer Jeff Beaver. "As an event, it's kind of the epitome of self expression, and that's what our web site is all about empowering." More 


Austin to Host New Musical Ten Mile Race

Race director Peter Douglass of Turnkey Operations, a former founding partner of San Diego-based Elite Racing, has announced a new music-themed race in Austin.  The Austin 10/20, a new 10-mile race is scheduled for April 15, 2012.  The race will have 20 stages along the course featuring 30 bands plus a post-race concert. More 

 

TriSports.com Installs Water Conservation System

TriSports.com has completed a rainwater harvesting system on its building in Tucson's Butterfield Business Park. The system will capture rainwater, HVAC condensation and evaporative cooler runoff. The two stainless steel collector tanks have the capacity to hold a combined 36,000 gallons of water and in an average rainfall year, the system will collect in excess of 100,000 gallons. TriSports.com was awarded a grant from the City of Tucson Conservation Program to help offset the cost of the installation. More


All Sports Productions Creates New Multisport Event in Eureka Springs

All Sports Productions, a Fayetteville sports event management. has announced a new multisport event to be held in the northwest Arkansas town of Eureka Springs this August. The Eureka Springs Multisport Festivalon August 12-14, will include a sprint-distance triathlon on Friday, road bike tour rides and races on Saturday and running races on Sunday. Any participant who can complete the triathlon, 100 mile ride and 10K run will be known as "The Eurekan." More

 

Tour of Elk Grove Adds Three-Stage Women's Race

The USA Cycling National Racing Calendar for women gained a significant boost with the news of the addition of a women's field to the Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove.  three-stage race for women, held from August 5-7 in Elk Grove Village on the outskirts of Chicago will be held in conjunction with the professional men's four-stage event. More

Landslide Forces Big Sur Marathon to Consider Alternative Race Routes

The Big Sur International Marathon will go on as planned - albeit with possible alterations - despite news that part of the course on picturesque Highway 1 has fallen into the Pacific Ocean. Caltrans estimated last week it would take at least one month to complete temporary repairs to the damage that occurred when about 40 feet of the two-lane highway washed out on a curve south of the Rocky Creek Bridge. Marathon race director Wally Kastner said he has a contingency plan if the road is closed on April 29, when the three-day event begins with a Health & Fitness Expo. More

 

NPS Denies Access to Quiznos Pro Challenge Race

Citing environmental and wildlife concerns, the Quiznos Pro Challenge bike race will not roll a stage through Colorado National Monument in 2012. "Closing the park to accommodate the needs of a commercial bike race goes against our management policies, would adversely impact park resources and would deny access to the park to other visitors," said National Park service director Jonathan Jarvis in a statement. More
 

Michigan Race Expands Youth Running Program

Grand Rapids's Fifth Third River Bank Run's "Feelin' Good Mileage Club," which started this week, has expanded from 30,000 to 50,000 students in kindergarten through sixth grade. The program, which encourages healthy living for children, now includes 126 elementary schools in seven counties. "It's been an incredible program," race director Kristen Aidif said. "It just grows every year, and every year we've had this waiting list and we haven't been able to make a big jump like this for a few years." When the program started 16 years ago, it had 5,000 participants.  More

 

Charlotte's Thunder Road Marathon Moves to November

Organizers of Charlotte's late-fall marathon have decided to play it safe with the weather and move their event a month earlier on the calendar. The seventh annual Thunder Road Marathon will take place November 12, race officials have announced. That compares with the traditional date for the race, on the first Saturday in December. More

 

BC Town Contributes $5K to Help Market Canadian Adventure Race

The Castlegear, BC, city council has agreed to provide one-third of the requested sponsorship by organizers of a popular outdoor endurance race set for the West Kootneay this summer. John Reed of Raid the North Extreme (RTNX) asked the City of Castlegar for a $15,000 marketing donation and said he would be asking Trail for the same. Although the outdoor race takes competitors all over the West Kootenay, he said he was only asking the two cities for partnership because the 500K race begins in Castlegar on July 23 and wraps up in Trail on July 31. More

Peloton Sports Named PR Agency for Tour of Utah

Peloton Sports, Inc., which provides media relations and publicity solutions for sports and entertainment properties, has been named as the public relations agency for the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah professional cycling race.  The internationally sanctioned event will be held August 9-14 in northern Utah.  Jackie Tyson, the owner of Peloton Sports, will oversee all media relations activities for the Tour of Utah, working directly with Medalist Sports, a full-service sports management and production company based in Atlanta.

 

US Road Sports Announces Record Bonuses for 13.1 Series Races

USRS

US Road Sports & Entertainment Group (USRS) announced today that it will award $100,000 to the winner of any 13.1 Marathon® Series race whose winning time breaks the world half marathon record.  Additionally, USRS will award $50,000 to any U.S. citizen who wins any 13.1Marathon® Series race and whose winning time breaks the U.S. half marathon record. The first race in the six race series to offer the bonuses will be the 13.1® New York on April 2.
