NY Police to Charge Increased Event Fees in 2012

The New York Times 

The New York Police Department will be charging organizers of the New York City Marathon and dozens of other races that use the city streets for traffic control costs and other services incurred for shutting down the roads. But the mayor's office has said the rule will not go in effect until January 1, 2012, allowing race organizers time to plan for the extra fees. More 


Running USA Marathon Report Shows Strong U.S. Marathon Growth

Despite the lingering recession, Running USA's Annual Marathon Report indicates that "marathon mania" continued in the U.S. with another record year of growth as U.S. marathons in 2010 had an estimated 507,000 finishers, an 8.6% increase from 2009, the second largest increase in the past 25 years. Luck Stone to Sponsor XTERRA East Championships

Luck Stone Corporation has committed at least $25,000 to sponsor this year's XTERRA East Championship in Richmond, VA.  The event will take place June 11-12. Mayor Dwight Jones, Councilman Doug Conner and Luck Stone executive Bob Grauer made the announcement at a press conference last week. "We are talking to XTERRA and the city on a multi-year sponsorship agreement," Grauer said, "We don't want this to be a one-done." More  

 

UCI Approves First Frame, Fork Models

The International Cycling Union (UCI) has approved the first models of frames and forks following requests submitted by their manufacturers. The approved models belong to the following brands: Richard Sachs Cycles, Scott Sports SA, Cicli Pinarello S.p.A., Willier Triestina S.p.A., Felt Bicycles, Cannondale Bicycle Corporation and BMC Trading AG et Corima SA. When they arrive on the market, the concerned frames and forks will feature a label certifying they are UCI approved. More   

 

Houston Marathon's Run for a Reason Program Raises Over $2M 

Houston Marathon 

The Chevron Houston Marathon's Run for a Reason charity program has raised a record $2,086,000 to benefit 52 charities. With more than 16,000 donations, the 2010-2011 season marks the second consecutive year the Run for a Reason program has set a new fundraising record, generating more than $12.4 million in the program's 17-year history. More 

 

Philadelphia Triathlon Adds CAF as Charity Partner

The Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon, one of the events in the Life Time Triathlon Series Race to the Toyota Cup, has announced a new charity partnership for 2011 with Challenged Athletes Foundation. Established in 1997, Challenged Athletes Foundation provides opportunities and support to people with physical disabilities so they can pursue active lifestyles through physical fitness and competitive athletics. ABG Sells Merlin Metalworks to Competitive Cyclist

American Bicycle Group has sold its Merlin Metalworks brand to Arkansas-based online retailer Competitive Cyclist. A pioneer in the production of hand-crafted titanium frames starting in 1986, Merlin will reach a wider audience at Competitive Cyclist, according to a press release. As part of the sale, ABG will retain the rights to manufacture and sell Merlin products to buyers in the Asian markets through 2012.  More

Canada Running Series Signs Deal with Clif Bar

The Canada Running Series has announced that Clif Bar & Company will be its partner for the 2011 season in the energy and nutrition bar and gel categories. The sponsorship will bring CLIF Bars, CLIF Builder's bars and CLIF SHOT Energy Gels to CRS events this year. More

Franz Koch, currently in charge of global strategy for Puma, will become its chief executive officer. Koch will succeed Puma's current CEO Jochen Zeitz.  Zeitz  is stepping down after 18 years for a new role at French parent company PPR.

 

Jennifer Purdie has been hired by Competitor Group, Inc. as senior editor of Inside Triathlon magazine.  Purdie has written for a variety of publications, including Running Times, Phoenix Magazine, Scottsdale Magazine, the Arizona Republic, and other industry fitness publications. 

 

Frank Raduziner has been hired by Hincapie Sportswear, the manufacturer and marketer of clothing for the performance cyclist. Raduziner will represent the brand in Southern California by handling retail cycling apparel and accessory sales to independent bicycle dealers and selling Hincapie custom cycling clothing to clubs and teams in California.   

 

Forrest Miller has been hired as timing manager for Perfect Timing in Bozeman, MT.

Race Timer

Company: World Triathlon Corporation

 

Ironman is looking for their next race timer. This is a full time salaried position with benefits.  Experience scoring is required. Experience with Championchip and Runscore is preferred.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, large database manipulation within excel, setting up networks at race sites, learning scoring software programming language, and preparing timing chips for use.  Ability to learn and adapt to technical programs is a must.  In addition to the skills listed here, this person would be expected to handle the stress of race day and maintain composure during intensive scrutiny by athletes and race directors. 

 

Specific duties for the position include managing and processing live data from large complex triathlons, managing a team of 6-8 people during race day and race week, setting up wireless and wired networks, coordinating with various internal and external parties pre and post race, learn and develop various processes related to timing, learn technical programs on the fly, large database management with Excel and Access, significant amount of travel on the weekends and some weekdays from May-October, flexible schedule on race week, and strong customer service skills.

 

Bachelor's degree from a four-year university, preferably IT related field, experience with large athletic events, ability to learn various detailed processes, ability to problem solve quickly and during non strong analytical skills, ability to plan months ahead and coordinate with multiple parties, strong customer service skills. Please submit word-formatted resume to pat@ironman.com
