RnR Las Vegas Moves to Sunday Night Start

The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series has announced the first ever nighttime start for the 2011 Zappos.com Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon & 1/2 Marathon to Benefit the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America.  Runners will span across all eight lanes of Las Vegas Boulevard on Sunday night, December 4.  The marathon will begin at 4 pm and the half-marathon will start at dusk, approximately 5:30 pm. Each race will have a limited capacity of entrants and an enforced time limit to complete the distance. More

Boston Marathon Adds Third Wave to Start

The B.A.A. will employ a third wave for the start of the 2011 Boston Marathon, with the idea of creating a more efficient and improved running experience for participants in the 115th edition of the world's oldest marathon.  Working in cooperation with the Town of Hopkinton and the Hopkinton Marathon Committee, the B.A.A. will institute three waves of mass participatory starters. Each wave will include approximately 9,000 official entrants. More

 

Gate River Run Expects Partnership with Title Sponsor to Continue

The current title sponsorship deal between Gate Petroleum Co. and the River Run expires after this year. But both Herb Peyton, Gate president and race director Doug Alred said they are confident the agreement will be renewed.  We're going to continue to support it and back it," Peyton said. "We don't make money on the River Run; it costs us money. But we think it's a great event for Jacksonville, and we are very proud to be part of it."  Gate Petroleum has been the title sponsor of the 15K race for 19 years. More

Pacific Sports to Organize New Oregon Triathlon

Eugene city officials announced Tuesday that the Eugene area will get its own triathlon this summer. Triathlon Eugene the Oregon Challenge will be held August 28 at Fern Ridge Lake - the first known major triathlon to be held in Lane County. "Eugene has an incredible sports culture," said Jack Caress, president and CEO of Anaheim, CA-based Pacific Sports LLC, which will put on the triathlon, amid hopes it will emerge as a well-known annual event that can draw hundreds to the area. OC Marathon Changes Course to Avoid Endangered Birds

The 2011 OC Marathon course will not use Back Bay Drive in order to protect endangered birds that live there, a race spokesman said Tuesday. Marathon organizers have eliminated the road that hugs the eastern shore of Upper Newport Bay in response to concerns raised by the U.S. Department of Fish and Game about the welfare of endangered species of birds that inhabit the area. These include the light-footed clapper rail and the California gnatcatcher. More

 

Investment Firm Buys Majority Stake in Activewear Company Vomax

Investment firm Triton Systems Inc has bought a majority stake in activewear maker Vomax, which it hopes to use as the springboard to take its Asset antimicrobial, water repellent and stain resistant coatings to the retail market. Vomax produces clothing imprinted with custom and licensed graphics for the cycling, nordic, triathlon and running markets.  Vomax will continue to be based in Northhampton, MA. More

Utah's Snowbasin Resort to Host XTERRA Championships

The 2011 XTERRA Trail Run National Championship is moving to Snowbasin Resort near Ogden, UT, on September 25. The XTERRA Trail Run Nationals will be held one day after the XTERRA USA Championship of off-road triathlon. According to Jeff Robbins, president and CEO of the Utah Sports Commission, "With Snowbasin hosting the XTERRA Trail Run Nationals on the same weekend as the off-road triathlon nationals, it is estimated the combined events will generate approximately $4 million to Utah's economy and generate media exposure of between $3 million to $4 million. Pittsburgh Marathon Offers Incentives for Olympic Trials Qualifiers

The Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon announced yesterday that it will offer special incentives and pacers to encourage Olympic hopefuls to run the May 15 race. A cash award of $1500 plus prizes and travel expenses will go to the top American male and female who achieves their first "A" qualifying time for the 2012 Olympic Trials in Houston.  Awards of $1250 in value are offered for the second and third place "A" qualifiers, and all first-time "A" and "B" qualifiers will receive a minimum of a $500 cash incentive, in addition to being eligible for the overall race prize purse. Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon Moves Start, Finish to North Coast Harbor

The 34th annual Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon on May 15 will start and finish in the North Coast Harbor near Cleveland Browns Stadium, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Great Lakes Science Center. Construction of the new Medical Mart downtown forced the course changes. More 

 

Bix 7 Honors Runner,  Volunteer with New Award

Quad-City Times Bix 7 executive race director Ed Froehlich announced yesterday that the race would include a new award named in honor of popular Bix runner and volunteer Eloise Caldwell. The Caldwell Trophy will go to the top female finisher from the Quad-Cities in the race. Caldwell, who was one of just three women to run in the inaugural Bix race in 1975, said she was "shocked and surprised" to learn she was being honored. More

 

Aspen to Host Two New Trail Marathons This Summer

The Aspen, CO area, which previously had no marathons, will host two this summer. The Aspen Valley Marathon, scheduled for July 9, will take place on the Rio Grande Trail between Herron Park in Aspen and Lions Park in Basalt. There will also be a half marathon starting in Woody Creek, organizer Kat Fitzgerald said. The Aspen Backcountry Marathon will take place on August 27, and will "showcase some of Aspen's most coveted trails while challenging even the well-trained athletes," according to a press release from Aspen Parks and Recreation, which is organizing the run. More

Jimmy Carnes, the former University of Florida track coach who with Marty Liquori created the Athletic Attic chain of running specialty stores, died on March 5 at age 76.  Among his many accomplishments, he founded the Florida Track Club which included top distance runners Frank Shorter, Jack Bacheler and Jeff Galloway. More

Ironman is looking for their next race timer. This is a full time salaried position with benefits.  Experience scoring is required. Experience with Championchip and Runscore is preferred.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, large database manipulation within excel, setting up networks at race sites, learning scoring software programming language, and preparing timing chips for use.  Ability to learn and adapt to technical programs is a must.  In addition to the skills listed here, this person would be expected to handle the stress of race day and maintain composure during intensive scrutiny by athletes and race directors. 

 

Specific duties for the position include managing and processing live data from large complex triathlons, managing a team of 6-8 people during race day and race week, setting up wireless and wired networks, coordinating with various internal and external parties pre and post race, learn and develop various processes related to timing, learn technical programs on the fly, large database management with Excel and Access, significant amount of travel on the weekends and some weekdays from May-October, flexible schedule on race week, and strong customer service skills.
