Boston Marathon Changes Registration Procedures, Standards

Boston Marathon organizers have announced plans to overhaul registration for the 2012 marathon and tighten qualifying standards for 2013. The changes will mark the first time in 33 years the marathon has toughened its qualifying times. Race organizers, citing "a sense of urgency,'' unveiled the new rules four months after registration for the 2011 event closed in a record 8 hours and 3 minutes. The new registration policy is aimed at guaranteeing entry to the fastest marathoners through a rolling, online admissions process that permits top qualifiers to register first. More
Active Network Prepares for $150M IPO

Active Network, one of San Diego's oldest venture-backed technology companies that has not gone public or been acquired, hopes to raise $150 million in an initial public stock offering, according to a prospectus filed Tuesday with federal regulators. More than 47,000 organizations use Active Network software, and its revenue grew 16 percent to $218 million through the first nine months of 2010 compared with a year earlier. More

K-Swiss Posts $20.6M 4Q Loss; Revenues Increase

K-Swiss Inc. widened its loss for the fourth quarter to $20.6 million from $12.5 million a year earlier. Worldwide revenues increased 1.5% to $42.7 million from $42.0 million a year ago. Domestic revenues increased 2.8% to $18,596,000 in the fourth quarter, and international revenues increased 0.6% to $24,069,000 for the same period. More
Pacific Sports Sues Santa Catalina Conservancy Over Catalina Marathon

Pacific Sports LLC, the producers of the Catalina Marathon since 1998, has filed suit against the Santa Catalina Island Conservancy and Spectrum Sports Management LLC after the Conservancy decided to change its role from permiter to race organizer for the 2012 race and hiring Spectrum Sports to help manage the event. Previously, the Conservancy received a permit fee and donations from Pacific Sports. More
New York Centurion Ride Postponed to 2012

The Centurion cycling race that was planned for June has been postponed until 2012. But the local organization that is tasked with promoting the Lake George event is likely to keep the public funds it received this year. Late last year, the Lake George NY Regional Chamber of Commerce was awarded $33,000 in Warren County occupancy tax revenue to host the 2011 cycling event. Instead of holding the Centurion race this year, with its 1,000 to 2,000 participants, chamber officials will use the 2011 occupancy tax money to host a VIP-only promotional ride and begin a marketing blitz in concert with Centurion Cycling. Critical SF City Agency Approved Race Medical Plan

The very agency whose director criticized the organizers of a half-marathon where a man died Sunday had no qualms with the medical plan submitted to it before the event. RhodyCo, the organizer of the Kaiser Permanente Half Marathon, promised city officials it would have a doctor, a defibrillator, six emergency medical technicians, and a dedicated ambulance and emergency crew available at the finish line, public records show. Spokeswoman Kathy Henning said the company complied with all those conditions. More
Sand Creek Changes from Stage Race to One-Day XC Race for 2011

Tour of Utah Announces 2011 Host Cities

Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Close to Five-Year Deal with City

The Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon and Half Marathon is close to getting a new five-year lease on life, officials said Monday. An economic report on the city's 2010 marathon estimated it generated $41.5 million in total impact, based on direct visitor spending of $26.1 million. That was the sixth-highest impact total among the 14 rock-themed marathons produced last year by the Competitor Group. City Manager Sheryl Sculley said that proposal should go to City Council for a vote next month. She expects it to win substantial support. More
CrossVegas Announces Changes for 2011 Race

Wisconsin Town Threatens Lawsuit Over $324 Charge to Race Organizer

The town of Dell Prairie may sue the organizers of the Wisconsin Dells Marathon and Half Marathon held in the town in October because of an unpaid $324 bill and $500 penalty from the town, even though the owner of the Illinois company, Adrenaline Sports Management, protested the charges at a meeting last week because he didn't expect them. Race Timer
Company: World Triathlon Corporation
Ironman is looking for their next race timer. This is a full time salaried position with benefits. Experience scoring is required. Experience with Championchip and Runscore is preferred. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, large database manipulation within excel, setting up networks at race sites, learning scoring software programming language, and preparing timing chips for use. Ability to learn and adapt to technical programs is a must. In addition to the skills listed here, this person would be expected to handle the stress of race day and maintain composure during intensive scrutiny by athletes and race directors.
Specific duties for the position include managing and processing live data from large complex triathlons, managing a team of 6-8 people during race day and race week, setting up wireless and wired networks, coordinating with various internal and external parties pre and post race, learn and develop various processes related to timing, learn technical programs on the fly, large database management with Excel and Access, significant amount of travel on the weekends and some weekdays from May-October, flexible schedule on race week, and strong customer service skills.
Bachelor's degree from a four-year university, preferably IT related field, experience with large athletic events, ability to learn various detailed processes, ability to problem solve quickly and during non strong analytical skills, ability to plan months ahead and coordinate with multiple parties, strong customer service skills.
