USA Triathlon Names Urbach as New CEO

USA Triathlon has hired accomplished marketer Rob Urbach as chief executive officer Wednesday to succeed Skip Gilbert, who was forced to resign in August after a clash with a 13-person board over an alleged conflict of interest. A skilled age-group triathlete and former All-American tennis player at Centre College in KY, Urbach, 48, of Arlington, VA, comes to USA Triathlon early next month from Cortview Capital Markets, where he's a managing director. He had previously held executive positions with sports marketing firms Octagon and SFX Sports Group. More

Proposed NY Police Fee Concerns Race Organizers

In an effort to generate revenue to cope with the city's budget deficit, the New York Police Department wants to charge the organizers of the New York City Marathon and dozens of other races the full cost of controlling traffic and other services. By charging a new, separate fee, the police are trying to offset the rising costs and increasingly burdensome job of shutting down traffic for popular athletic events. But the proposed rule change - which does not need City Council approval - could let the police bill race organizers for their expenses after the events have been held, making it harder for event directors to plan. More
UCI Creates World Cycling Tour for "Well Trained Amateurs"

The International Cycling Union (UCI) has created a new World Cycling Tour (UWCT), which offers the chance to amateur cyclists to earn their own rainbow jersey. Through participation in one of a number of events around the world, riders will be able to qualify for a final, with a world title for their respective age group as the ultimate goal. The UCI is targeting what it refers to as "the well trained amateur", which is "the typical profile of the Gran Fondo rider. More

RhodyCo Disputes SF City Officials' Criticism of Race Medical Response

RhodyCo, organizers of last Sunday's Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Half Marathon in Golden Gate Park have disputed statements by city emergency and fire officials about whether adequate medical resources were provided for the event. A race participant, Peter Hass, 36, of Orinda, CA, died near the race finish line, according to the San Francisco medical examiner's office. More

Palos Verdes Marathon Gets Approval for 2011 Race

A week after the future of the Palos Verdes Marathon appeared in danger, it seems the race will keep chugging along. Promoted as the nation's second-oldest such event, the 45th annual marathon is set for May 14 following a Rancho Palos Verdes City Council vote to continue planning for the race. The event's organizers, the Kiwanis Club of Rolling Hills Estates, had based the race out of Point Fermin Park in San Pedro for the past decade. But faced with rising fees in Los Angeles, they chose to move the event headquarters for the first time to Rancho Palos Verdes - only to find that costs were steep there as well. More

The foundation set up to honor a Stillwater, MN man who fell and died while hiking on an Idaho mountain has pulled its name from a popular road race in a dispute over money. The Stillwater half-marathon that was named for Jon Francis, however, will continue, said race organizer Dave Eckberg.The half-marathon attracted nearly 1,000 runners last spring, but $2,246 owed to the Jon Francis Foundation for 80 workers wasn't paid until two weeks ago, said David Francis, foundation president and Jon's father. Louisville Derby Festival Races Revise Race Courses
WAVE The miniMarathon and Marathon kick-off two weeks of Derby activities in Louisville, but this year there will be some changes to the courses. For the first time, both races will start and finish in downtown Louisville. According to a news release from the Derby Festival Committee, the races will start on Main Street, alongside Louisville Slugger Field, and finish just outside the entrance to Kroger's Fest-a-Ville venue at Preston and Witherspoon streets. Shawn Hunter, former president of AEG Sports has joined Colorado's Quiznos Pro Challenge cycling race as co-chair, the race announced this week. Hunter, a former executive vice president of the Avalanche and Nuggets, helped make the Tour of California the top cycling race in the U.S. during its first two years in 2006-07. He then worked 3 1/2 years as CEO of Chivas USA of Major League Soccer and has overseen 11 sports teams around the world. He will join Rich Schaden, the race founder, as co-chair. The move allows Quiznos to concentrate on sponsorship instead of race management.
Jan Singler has been named by Nike as its vice president of global apparel. Singler was the company's vice president of global footwear. Andrea Correani will be the new vice president of global footwear.
Kylee Belflower has been promoted to vice president by Pacific Sports LLC. She previously was director of marketing. In other personnel announcements by the Anaheim, CA sports management company, Jameson Shaw has been hired as director of operations, Kate Vakay has been hired as as director of development, and Jenna Helton will be the new marketing and event coordinator.
Ray Keener has been hired by the Bicycle Products Suppliers Association has hired as its part-time executive marketing director. Keener will be responsible for membership development, website management, cooperative alliance with Interbike, public relations, and Bicycle Leadership Conference planning. Keener's company, Growth Cycle, will continue to support retailers worldwide with the Selling Cycling staff training program.
Nona Snell of Olympia, WA has been named the new race director for the Capital City Marathon, securing the immediate future of the race that began in 1981. Snell will job-shadow outgoing race director Lesley Roberts and take over the volunteer position after this year's race, which will be May 15. Snell is a veteran marathon and is a policy director for the State of Washington Treasurer's Office.
