ASO, AEG Extend Tour of California Partnership; Versus to Broadcast Race 

Cycling News 

The owners of the Tour de France and Amgen Tour of California, the Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) and AEG, announced today that they have extended their partnership through 2013. The ASO will produce the television coverage of the Amgen Tour of California, which takes place from May 15-22 this year, bringing world-wide high-definition coverage of the event. AEG also announced a multi-year deal with the Versus network in the USA to broadcast the race. More

 

Triathlon America to Present Awards at Upcoming Conference

Triathlon America

Triathlon America, the triathlon business organization launched in October, announced today that it will present awards recognizing achievements in the triathlon industry and the best triathletes at the Triathlon America Awards Celebration on February 28 in La Jolla, CA.  The awards celebration is a part of the organization's February 28-March 1 conference.  Among the awards categories are Retailers of the Year, Best New Triathlon Product, Athletes of the Year for both long distance and Olympic distance, men and women, and the highlight Most Valuable Triathlete (MVT) Award. More

Digital Tri-Magazine to Debut in March 

Bicycle Retailer 

H3 Publications will be adding a digital magazine to its lineup in March called Tri-Magazine. April's first issue will be available for free to readers to download and will be viewable on computers, iPads, iPhones and other smartphones on March 1. Last January H3 had announced a similar magazine, but in print form. Two months later H3 owner Dave House pulled the plug on that magazine, but still left the door open for a future launch. More 

 

McQuaid Denies Conflict in Richmond World Championships Bid 

Cycling News 

Darach McQuaid of Shadetree Sports marketing agency has insisted that there is no conflict of interests between his role in Richmond, VA's bid to host the 2015 world championships and his brother Pat's position as president of the UCI. He also revealed that a major new United States-based stage race is in the pipeline for the 2012 season. More 

 

Judge's Restraining Order Stops Maui Paradise Marathon 

The Maui News 

Saying the organizer of the Maui Paradise Marathon must follow Maui County rules to hold the race on public roadways, 2nd Circuit Judge Joel August signed a temporary restraining order to stop the event that was scheduled for Sunday in South Maui. More

 

Tour of the Battenkill Withdraws Men's Pro Race from UCI Calendar

The organizers of New York's Tour of the Battenkill are withdrawing the event's pro men's race from the UCI calendar due to sponsor difficulties - and in response to USA Cycling's decision to allow higher ranked teams to compete at National Racing Calendar criteriums, but not at NRC road races or stage races. Race director Dieter Drake had announced last week that he was considering consolidating his two-weekend event, a decision that likely would have cost the pro men's race its UCI registration. More

 

Cervelo, Canyon Settle Patent Dispute with Sharing Agreement

Bicycle manufacturers Cervélo and Canyon have reached a settlement agreement in their dispute over the latter company's patented Maximus Seat Tube design, with the two companies agreeing to share certain design patents. More

King Ridge Gran Fondo Registration Hits Snag

The Press Democrat

The launch of registration for Levi Leipheimer's King Ridge GranFondo cycling event failed Monday, forcing organizers to suspend the process while moving to new computer servers. Registration will reopen at noon Tuesday after event organizers finish changes to the website that should help it field the avalanche of cyclists who bombarded the group's server and registration database software. More

 

Statues to Honor Terry Fox, Marathon of Hope

The Province 

A series of four bronze statues depicting the unique running gait of Terry Fox will be erected on the plaza outside B.C. Place Stadium named after the Marathon of Hope hero. A rendering of the statues, which were designed by Vancouver artist and writer Douglas Coupland, was unveiled Tuesday at a press conference attended by members of Fox's family and Premier Gordon Campbell.  Terry Fox runs that have so far raised $550 million for cancer research. More

 

Alaska's Equinox Marathon Works to Reroute Course 

Fairbanks Daily News-Miner 

Plans to reroute the Equinox Marathon Trail to avoid a steep and badly eroded section on Ester Dome are under review as part of negotiations by the borough to get approval from the Alaska Mental Health Trust to cross trust lands. The September race would still go on the same route, but trail use the rest of the year would be directed elsewhere to limit liability and erosion. More

 

EnduraFit Partners with TriColumbia to Provide Apparel, Merchandising 

EnduraFit LLC 

EnduraFit, LLC has announced a partnership with the Columbia Triathlon Association/TriColumbia for EnduraFit to supply TriColumbia events with performance apparel and to handle on-line and on-site retail merchandising.  TriColumbia organizes endurance events in the Mid-Atlantic region including the The Columbia Triathlon and the Ironman 70.3 EagleMan Triathlon.

 

Primal Wear to Sponsor High School Mountain Bike Association

Clothing supplier Primal Wear is making a three-year sponsorship agreement with the National Interscholastic Cycling Association, the group that coordinates high school mountain bike racing in six leagues. The Denver-based clothing company will provide the league with $300,000 worth of custom cycling jerseys over three seasons. More

 

St. Louis Bike Retailer to Open Two New Stores 

Bicycle Retailer 

The two-store Big Shark Bicycle Company in St. Louis is expanding with two new stores set to open this spring. Urban Shark is a 3,500-square-foot store in downtown St. Louis housed in the same building as a new bike station that offers lockers, bike storage and showers for riders commuting to work. The 6,000-square-foot Big Shark West is opening in a retail center in Chesterfield, a suburb 20 miles outside of St. Louis, taking over the space occupied by Ghisallo Sports, which closed last summer. More

Bob Wendling has been elected as president of USA Triathlon during a board of directors meeting in Colorado Springs. Elite athlete representative Steve Sexton will replace Wendling as board treasurer, and vice president Eric Averill and secretary Candy Cheatham were re-elected to their positions. 

  

Chris Morgan and John Huenink have been hired as sales representatives by Hincapie Sportswear. Morgan and Huenink will represent Hincapie for retail cycling apparel and accessory sales to independent bicycle dealers and sell Hincapie custom cycling clothing to clubs and teams in their respective territories. Morgan;s territory is Florida, Alabama and Georgia and Huenink's territory is Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois. 

 

Elinor Fish, former managing editor for Trail Runner magazine, has joined Backbone Media, a public relations and media agency servicing clients in the active outdoor lifestyle space as an account manager.
