ASICS Debuts New Global Ad Campaign This Month

ASICS' largest marketing initiative to date, entitled "Sport Releases More Than Just Sweat," launches globally this month. "We're taking things to the next level," says Gary Slayton, V.P. of Marketing Communications at ASICS America. "This is a new approach for us as a brand, using a single campaign, a single message, for all our footwear, apparel and accessories around the world. Hawaii Tourism Sports Dollars Follow TV, Leaves Out Marathon

The Hawaii Tourism Authority invests between $7 million and $8 million yearly in a portfolio of varied sports competitions with the hope the investment pays off by bringing more visitors to the islands. But the spending reflects the HTA's view that television exposure is more valuable than event participation. The HTA pays $4 million to the NFL for the Pro Bowl and $1.7 million to the PGA for golf events but nothing to the Honolulu Marathon, the state's largest event revenue producer with an estimated $100 million annual economic impact. The Ford Ironman World Championship gets $200,000. More

Columbia Sets Sights on Hosting Ironman Race

Columbia, S.C. officials want to host an Ironman triathlon as part of its efforts to establish Columbia as a fitness-friendly city. Ironman officials will visit Columbia Monday to meet with city officials to review their proposal, according to Ric Luber, president and CEO of the Midlands Authority for Conventions, Sports and Tourism. Mayor Steve Benjamin has thrown in his support, saying hosting an Ironman would be a "huge win not just for our city, but for our entire region." More
Nike, TomTom Partner on Nike+Sports Watch

Nike announced at this week's Consumer Electronics Show a partnership with TomTom to create the Nike+ SportsWatch Plus GPS. The 1.5 x 10.8 x .6-inch watch weighs 2.3 ounces and comes with a shoe sensor to track your steps. TomTom provides the GPS functionality and that works in tandem with a sensor that the runner places in their shoe. More

Organizer Looks to Launch Denver Triathlon in July

An inaugural Denver Triathlon has been tentatively scheduled for July 24. It's not a done deal - a lot of details still must be worked out - but Ironman triathlete Chris Laskey is giving his all to make it happen. "It's not that this area is lacking for triathlons," Laskey said. "It's just that, with the amount of triathletes in the area and the type of city Denver is, it's time for (a triathlon) that showcases the city and becomes a major marquee event. Test of Metal Bike Race Sells Out in 22 Minutes

British Columbia's 16th annual North Shore Credit Union Test of Metal mountain bike race sold out its 800 spots in 22 minutes and 47 seconds, taking almost two minutes out of the record set for the 2010 race. Lincoln Marathon Increases Field Size to 10,000

Lincoln Marathon race officials have increased the field from 8,000 to 10,000 runners for this year, but again expect to reach the limit early. Last year, registration closed a month early. The race will be held on May 1. More

Operations Manager

The Operations Manager will lead an operations team for a group of 5-8+ Rock 'n' Roll Marathon series running events, with a focus on course design and implementation and will guide and oversee all operational aspects of the race, including start line, finish line, band sites, water stations, cheer sites, medical stations, etc. This will include designing all band sites, cheer sites and medical stations which requires a keen sense of direction and understanding of the scope of the event. The position will include high-level coordination and direct interface with city special events offices, police, traffic control, local contractors, vendors and management of staff to aid the successful execution of the event, and as such will require a significant amount of travel, often for up to a week at a time. The position will also require the ability to work in a high-pressure, deadline-oriented environment with the added ability to multi-task.
