BAA Discussing Changes to Boston Marathon Entry Process

With the 2011 Boston Marathon selling out in a record 8 hours 3 minutes in October, Boston Athletic Association officials are considering changes to its race registration process.  After numerous meetings and research, the BAA has narrowed its options to what race director Dave McGillivray called some "necessary adjustments'' and "a few innovative approaches.'' The final formula will involve a combination of adjustments to the qualifying standards, field size, and registration start date and window during which runners can qualify. It is highly unlikely any form of lottery will be instituted. More

Tokyo Marathon to Give 2012 Preferred Entries to Members

The Tokyo Marathon will start giving preferred entry to runners who pay a membership fee, organizers announced Friday.The Tokyo Marathon Foundation said it will begin accepting members in February with the preferred allocation will start with the 2012 race. There were more than 330,000 applications for the 2011 Marathon and the 10-kilometer race combined. Also the foundation started allowing 2011 race entry to the first 1,000 people who offer a charitable donation of 100,000 yen or more. More

 

Richmond to Bid for 2015 UCI Road World Championships

Richmond, VA officially announced this week that it would put in a bid to host the 2015 UCI road world championships. Mayor Dwight C. Jones, Shadetree Sports principals Darach McQuaid and David Kalman and USA Cycling CEO Steve Johnson confirmed speculation about the bid that came out of a previous announcement of the press conference. It has been almost 25 years since the worlds were held in the USA when Colorado hosted the event.  More

 

Nike Reports Quarterly Rise in Sales, Profits

Nike Inc., on Tuesday reported double-digit increases in revenue and profit from the same quarter a year ago. Nike earned $457 million for the three-month period that ended November 30. That's up sharply from the $375 million it earned a year earlier. Nike's revenue increased 10 percent to $4.8 billion in the quarter.  More

American Birkebeiner Sells Out in Record Time

American Birkebeiner race officials closed registration for the February 26, 2011 race on Saturday as it reached the 8400 skier entry limit. As of noon Friday, 5,896 skiers had registered for the Birkebeiner and 2,230 were signed up for the 23-kilomoter Kortelopet. The largest ski race in North America and fourth-largest in the world reached its record field in record time. For 2010, the field limit was set at 7,500 and filled a few weeks before the race. More 

 

Chicago Half Marathon Study Shows Benefit to Area Economy

The 14th Chicago Half Marathon and 5K contributed nearly $10 million to the local economy in 2010, through direct spending and induced impact by non-local participants and spectators, according to race operator US Road Sports & Entertainment Group. Announced this week, the total economic impact also included the creation of 111 jobs, bringing in $3,680,438 in labor income, according to Temple University's Sport Industry Research Center, which helps examine the measurable, positive impact of events on local communities. More

 

Houston Suburb to Revive Marathon in 2012

The Woodlands, TX, will host a revived The Woodlands Marathon, race organizers have announced.  The newly created Woodlands-based Launch Multisport unveiled its setup for the event, which is slated to start March 3, 2012, during a news conference Saturday afternoon. The event would also include a half marathon, a 5K run, a family 2K run, a corporate relay marathon and a health and fitness expo. A minimum prize purse of $20,000 will be offered. More

 

Showers Pass Cycling Apparel Looks to Continue Growth

A year ago, Showers Pass Inc. sold its high-end cycling apparel in 250 retailers across the United States and Canada. Today, that figure stands at about 300 -- and co-president Ed Dalton predicts it will eventually top 2,000. Portland-based Showers Pass is pushing for more, moving from advertising in niche publications to the widely distributed Bicycling magazine. More

 

Oakland Marathon Revises Course to Reduce Traffic Issues

Mayor's Marathon Adds Course Record Bonuses

The 2011 Mayor's Marathon and Half Marathon in Anchorage, set for June 18, will reward any runner who clocks a course record in either the women's or men's marathon with a $5,000 cash prize. A course record in the half-marathon will earn the record-breaker a $1,000 cash prize. More

 

Fort Collins to Host Echelon Gran Fondo Series Event

Fort Collins snagged another cycling coup Tuesday when Echelon Gran Fondo Series officials said they will stage an event that will attract thousands of riders here in 2011. Hunter Ziesing, executive director of Planet Z/Echelon, said the event will take place August 19-21 and will include 70- and 100-mile rides in Rist Canyon, criterium rides downtown, charity circuit rides, cyclocross and mountain bike options, bands, and food and drink booths. Planet Z/Echelon will team with the Fort Collins Cycling Festival to put on the event. More

Skinny Raven Sports to Open New "Skinny Mini" Store

Skinny Raven Sports plans to open a satellite store in South Anchorage this month. At 1,100 square feet of retail space, the new running specialty store is about half the size of Skinny Raven's flagship running store downtown. But it has some unique features, such as an 85-meter outdoor running track. More

Outer Banks Marathon Spending Boosts Local Economy

Runners, their families and their friends spent more than $6 million during the weekend of North Carolina's Outer Banks Marathon, providing a nice helping of capital before the Thanskgiving holiday. Outer Banks Sporting Events reported that 8,339 runners participated in various events over the November 13 weekend, including the marathon, the half marathon, an 8K, a 5k and a fun run. More

Event Manager - Team MultiSport

The overall objective of the event manager is to work as a team leader for the Muddy Buddy Ride and Run series and serve as the overall event manager for multiple races within the National Series. The event manager will oversee permitting, course design, equipment set-up and tear down and management of temporary event personnel and volunteers. This will require a strong understanding of multisport operational event requirements.  The position will require leading and working with a team in all functional areas of the company- marketing, public relations, customer service and accounting. It will also require communication and management of temporary staff and independent contractors to aid in the successful execution of an event. Experience in managing relationships with key stakeholders is integral to this position.  Flexibility to perform similar duties for other divisional multisport projects will be expected. FOTW's new Executive Director will be a demonstrated leader who is creative, self-directed, motivated and passionate about mountain biking. Operations Manager

The Operations Manager will lead an operations team for a group of 5-8+ Rock 'n' Roll Marathon series running events, with a focus on course design and implementation and will guide and oversee all operational aspects of the race, including start line, finish line, band sites, water stations, cheer sites, medical stations, etc. This will include designing all band sites, cheer sites and medical stations which requires a keen sense of direction and understanding of the scope of the event. The position will include high-level coordination and direct interface with city special events offices, police, traffic control, local contractors, vendors and management of staff to aid the successful execution of the event, and as such will require a significant amount of travel, often for up to a week at a time. The position will also require the ability to work in a high-pressure, deadline-oriented environment with the added ability to multi-task. All this must be done in a professional manner with the ability to work well in a team atmosphere. This is a "Hands-on" and "High-energy" position.  This position reports directly to the Director of Operations and works closely with the Senior Vice President of Operations.
