Honolulu Marathon Adjusts to Loss of Nike Sponsorship

The Honolulu Marathon has lost Nike as one of its key sponsors. "Nike is no longer with us. It has been a long-time sponsor. It was a great relationship, but times have been tough for everyone," said Dr. Jim Barahal, Honolulu Marathon president.  Barahal said Nike was a marathon sponsor for the last 16 years, and brought in about $100,000 each year in cash, services and merchandise. The marathon will make up for the loss of Nike's sponsorship by cutting costs and raising revenues. More

 

Quiznos Pro Challenge Attracts Top Cycling Teams

Five of the biggest teams in pro cycling have been confirmed as participating in year one of the Quiznos Pro Challenge in Colorado, including four US ProTeams. Garmin-Cervelo, HTC-Highroad, BMC Racing and Team RadioShack will be joined by the Italian squad Liquigas for the seven day, near-600 mile race. A total of sixteen teams are expected to take part in the tour. More

Executives who direct Olympic national governing bodies make an average of $228,456, and the U.S. Tennis Association boss tops the list as the only leader to crack seven figures, having collected $1.3 million last year, according to a study conducted by The Gazette of Colorado Springs. More

Baltimore Running Festival Boosts Local Economy by $27.9M

The 2010 Under Armour Baltimore Running Festival contributed an event record $27,879,215 to the city and state's economy according to a recent study by RESI, an economic research and consulting firm located at Towson University.  The event also reported that the charitable proceeds from the race topped $1 million for the first time. New Jersey to Host New Gran Fondo Race

Marty's Reliable Cycle is partnering with a Clinton, NJ-based sports production company Pace Racing to put on a large-scale bike race next summer.  The Gran Fondo New Jersey is scheduled for the last weekend in August and will include 100-, 60-, and 30-mile timed races originating in Morristown and stretching out west as far as Hunterdon County. More
 
Another New Gran Fondo Ride Set for Canadian Rockies

Mabel Outdoor Events Inc., in conjunction with TCR Sport Lab, has announced the first gran fondo cycling event in Alberta. The 2011 Gran Fondo Rockies will be held on July 24, 2011. Up to 2000 riders of all abilities will converge south of Calgary and ride various distances up to 170 km ib a scenic and rolling loop route through the Rocky Mountain foothills. More 

Fleet Feet Sports Winston-Salem Moves to Larger Location

The specialty running store Fleet Feet Sports in Winston-Salem, NC has moved to the old Master's Loft building, across from Whole Foods Market on Miller Street.  Franchise owners Emily and Keith Davis have doubled their space and now have about 5,200 square feet for athletic shoes, fittings, programs, offices and a break room. More

Spincycle Sports Marketing's Georgia Cup race series, now entering its 10th year, has risen to the top as one of the nation's largest race series put on by a single promoter.  The series will grow again in 2011 with the addition of four Gran Fondo rides, a running series and a weekday triathlon series.  The organization also announced that Champion System has signed as its official clothing sponsor. More

Susan Daniels has been promoted to event manager at St. Anthony's Hospital and will be responsible for coordinating race logistics with the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) to produce the St. Anthony's Triathlon. The St. Anthony's Triathlon, which is owned and operated by St. Anthony's Hospital, recently became part of the WTC 5150 Triathlon series.  Susan will also lead the team to organize other community races such as the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Morton Plant Mease Triathlon, and the Madeira Beach Triathlon. 

 

Robert Winston, a senior vice president of Morgan Stanley in La Jolla, CA, has been elected as chairman of the International Mountain Bike Association board of directors.  Elayna Caldwell, a marketing manager at Fox Racing Shox, was elected vice chair.

 

Scott Kerslake has become the CEO of Prana Living, LLC, the maker of outdoor, yoga and active lifestyle apparel. Kerslake succeeds Prana founder and CEO, Beaver Theodosakis, who will remain on the board of directors.

 

Dan Hayes, the vice president at Lee Communications and former editor of the Quad-City Times who has been instrumental in growing the Quad-City Times Bix 7 from a neighborhood run to a road race of international prominence, will join a group of individuals immortalized in bronze at the intersection of 4th Street and River Drive in Davenport, IA. More

 

Jill Gleeson has been hired as the chief operating officer of ChiLiving, the parent company of ChiRunning and ChiWalking.  Gleeson was the vice president of the National Market Segment of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida. ChiLiving Inc., based in Asheville, N.C., offers a variety of training support materials including consumer DVDs and technique-based training programs - for any distance from a 5K to a marathon.

 

Virginia Brophy Achman, the executive director of Twin Cities in Motion, was presented with the H. Browning Ross Merit Award at last week's USA Track & Field Annual Meeting in Virginia Beach, VA.  The award is presented by the Men's Long Distance Running Committee.

Operations Manager

The Operations Manager will lead an operations team for a group of 5-8+ Rock 'n' Roll Marathon series running events, with a focus on course design and implementation and will guide and oversee all operational aspects of the race, including start line, finish line, band sites, water stations, cheer sites, medical stations, etc. This will include designing all band sites, cheer sites and medical stations which requires a keen sense of direction and understanding of the scope of the event. The position will include high-level coordination and direct interface with city special events offices, police, traffic control, local contractors, vendors and management of staff to aid the successful execution of the event, and as such will require a significant amount of travel, often for up to a week at a time. The position will also require the ability to work in a high-pressure, deadline-oriented environment with the added ability to multi-task. All this must be done in a professional manner with the ability to work well in a team atmosphere. This is a "Hands-on" and "High-energy" position.  This position reports directly to the Director of Operations and works closely with the Senior Vice President of Operations.
