2010 ING NYC Marathon Raises $30M for Charity

The 2010 ING New York City Marathon raised more than $30 million for charity, the biggest haul in the marathon's history, race officials announced Wednesday. Nearly $20 million was for New York City-based programs, said Mary Wittenberg, chief executive of New York Road Runners, which organizes the race. She has been on a campaign to get more local charities involved in the marathon as a way to leverage the event's economic impact throughout the city. More

Nike Releases Environmental Apparel Design Tool

Nike Inc. on Tuesday released to the public a tool to help designers build more sustainable products. The company spent seven years and $6 million developing the Environmental Apparel Design Tool, a web-based portal that uses a scoring system to rate a product's environmental impact. "This tool is about making it simple for designers to make the most sustainable choices right at the start of the product creation process," Hannah Jones, Nike's vice president of sustainable innovation, said in a news release. Pearl Izumi Sues Slipstream Sports Over Racing Suits

Pearl Izumi has filed a lawsuit against Slipstream Sports -- which manages the Garmin-Transitions pro cycling team -- over a dozen "winged suits" that the technical clothing manufacturer made for the riders. According to the lawsuit, the team refused to return the suits and now has signed with another apparel company. More Honda LA Marathon Unveils Revised Stadium to the Sea Course

The Honda LA Marathon has unveiled its 2011 version of its Stadium to the Sea course which adds Chinatown's Dragon Gateway and the Little Tokyo Historic District to the list of landmarks that includes Los Angeles City Hall, Grauman's Chinese Theater, the Capitol Records Building, Sunset Strip and Rodeo Drive. The race starts at Dodger Stadium and finishes in Santa Monica. London Triathlon Signs Title Sponsorship Deal with Virgin Clubs

A three-year deal to title sponsor the London Triathlon from 2011 has been signed by Virgin Active Health Clubs. The deal, the value of which has not been disclosed, will mean the event, which is owned by IMG Challenger World, named the Virgin Active London Triathlon. It amplifies the Virgin brand's association with sport being built by its five-year $26 million sponsorship of the London Marathon, with Virgin Money as the lead brand, which started this year. More

USA Triathlon has announced that the 2010 USA Triathlon Age Group/Sprint/Elite National Championships has earned the FitPlanet Verified Pledge of Sustainability. Prior to this year's event, USA Triathlon took the FitPlanet Pledge of Sustainability, which "provides event organizers with formal and public recognition for taking steps to become more environmentally responsible." The pledge requires that any event meet a minimum of 10 eco-practices to qualify. More

Chris Fortune, president of Saris Cycling Group, has been elected as the new chairman of the Bikes Belong board of directors. He replaces outgoing chairman Steve Meineke, president of Raleigh America, whose two-year term had expired. Also Michael Mercuri, vice president of SRAM, was elected as vice chairman, and Nielsen group show director Andy Tompkins was elected secretary and treasurer.
Ed Froehlich, the director of the Quad-City Times Bix 7 since 1980, will become the fourth recipient of the Allen Steinfeld Award for lifetime achievement in men's long-distance running. Froehlich will receive the award Saturday at USA Track & Field's annual meeting in Virginia Beach, VA. The award, named for the former director of the New York City Marathon, has been presented annually since 2007.
