Playmakers Named 2010 Running Store of the Year

Playmakers, the Okemos, MI retailer that was one of the first running stores to use a big-store concept, was named Store of the Year last week at The Running Event in Austin, TX. The presentation was the highlight of The 50 Best Running Stores in America awards program.  The other finalists were Fleet Feet Sports in Syracuse, NY, A Snail's Pace in Southern California and Texas' Luke's Locker.

ITU to Open Office at Maison du Sport International Next Spring

A new strategic base for the International Triathlon Union (ITU) will open in the Olympic capital of Lausanne, Switzerland, in the spring. The sport's world governing body will be taking up residence at the Maison du Sport International - a unique complex accommodating the headquarters of more than 20 international sports federations and organisations. The ITU's headquarters will remain in Vancouver, Canada. More

 

Asics to Introduce Lower Priced Running Shoes to Build Sales

Asics Corp., targeting an almost doubling of sales in five years, plans to compete against Nike Inc. and Adidas AG by offering more lower-priced running shoes.  Asics executive Toshiyuki Sano said Asics will introduce more entry-level models with a recommended retail price of around $60. More

Aspen Estimates $180K Cost to Host Quiznos Pro Challenge Stage

Hosting a stage finish of next summer's Quiznos Pro Challenge cycling race will cost the Colorado resort community of Aspen around $180,000, according to a preliminary estimate. Those costs include labor, security, meals for race participants and organizers, press accommodations, portable toilets, fencing and crowd control, said Deric Gunshor, co-chair of the Aspen organizing committee for the race. "It's an expensive undertaking," Gunshor said, but the publicity bestowed upon Aspen, as well as the visitors the race will bring to town, should be well worth it, he said. More

 

Atlanta Track Club Moves Atlanta Marathon to October

Atlanta Track Club 

The Atlanta Track Club (ATC), organizer of the AJC Peachtree Road Race and the Atlanta Half Marathon, announced Tuesday that the 2011 Atlanta Marathon will take place on October 30, 2011.  In addition to the marathon, the event will also feature a four-person marathon relay with relay leg distances ranging from four to eight miles. The marathon, traditionally held on Thanksgiving Day, was not held this year. More

 

Nike Increases Quarterly Dividend by 15%

Nike Inc. last week increased its quarterly dividend payments by 15 percent, making the ninth-straight year of increases. The athletic footwear and apparel company will pay 31 cents per share on the company's outstanding Class A and Class B stock to shareholders of record at the end of business on December 6. More

USA Cycling Adds Singlespeed to Cyclocross Nationals

The USCF Board of Trustees has voted to add a singlespeed national championship category to this year's Cyclo-Cross National Championships with no category restrictions for 2010.  Singlespeed bikes will be required to have a freewheel, one cog and drop bars. More

Dave McGillivray, founder and president of Massachusetts-based DMSE Sports and race director of the BAA Boston Marathon, received the Ron Burton Community Service Award for 2010 at a ceremony last Friday at Gillette Stadium. McGillivray has helped raise millions of dollars for charitable causes by participating in, producing and directing athletic events over the past 30-plus years.  The ceremony was part of the annual MIAA/MSSADA Sportsmanship Summit attended by more than 1,000 high school athletes and educators. 

 

Bo LaMotte, senior vice president of distribution for Universal Sports Network, has decided to resign  the company announced yesterday. LaMotte, who has been with the network since it formed in 2006, is leaving Universal Sports to pursue other business opportunities. In his four-plus years with Universal Sports, he was able to grow the network's television distribution from zero to over 63 million households.

 

Matt Jaberg has been hired by Encinitas, CA multisport retailer Nytro as its service manager.  Jaberg spent the past three years at B+L Sports in the service department initially as a wrench and left as the service manager.  He has also spent 13 years working in bike shops including Bicycle Garage in Indianapolis and Bicycle Ranch Scottsdale.  Jaberg replaces James Lowe who has returned to Colorado to complete his college degree.

Sales Coordinator
