5150 U.S. Championship to Offer $1M-plus Prize Purse

The World Triathlon Corporation has announced that professional athletes who qualify for and compete in the 5150 U.S. Championship at the Hy-Vee Triathlon on September 4 will be eligible for more than $1.1 million in prize money. The men's and women's winners will each receive $151,500 plus possible lap bonus money. Additionally, top finishers in amateur categories will qualify for the 5150 U.S. Championship and will be eligible for $120,000-plus worth of prizes and product including a Ford vehicle to the overall open amateur champions. Tri-California Brings Sports Together in new TRIFECTA Festival

Tri-California, Inc. has announced the TRIFECTA, a new lifestyle-sports festival in Santa Clarita, CA that will bring together three running, three cycling, and three triathlon events during a single weekend event next June. The June 2-5 events will include 5K, 10K and half marathon runs, Piccolo Fondo (33 miles), Medio Fondo (60 miles) and Gran Fondo (110 miles) rides and sprint, international and long course triathlons. Portland Develops Plan to Support Athletic and Outdoor Industry

Recognizing the importance of an athletic and outdoor industry that includes Nike, Columbia Sportswear and adidas America, the Portland Development Commission announced Tuesday a new action plan to nurture the region's sector and help it continue to grow economically. The commission published a report that says the industry in the Portland area includes more than 300 firms with a payroll, employing more than 14,000 Oregonians at an average wage of more than $80,000 annually. An additional 3,200 people are self-employed in the industry, with sales of $100 million a year. More |

Temple University Study Finds Philly Marathon Adds $15.4M to City

A survey by Temple University's Sport Industry Research Center has found that the Philadelphia Marathon pumped $15.4 million into the city's economy last year and attracted thousands of affluent visitors who are likely to promote future tourism due to their high satisfaction with the event. More

Nation's Triathlon Generates $6.8M Impact

An economic impact study of the 2010 Nation's Triathlon reported that direct and indirect spending by race organizers, 7,200 registered athletes, an estimated 15,000 spectators, and more than 50 sponsors generated more than $6.8 million. Direct spending including race costs, lodging, meals, retail purchases, transportation and entertainment, and indirect spending was calculated based on industry standards.

The Cellcom Green Bay Marathon has selected Junior Achievement of Wisconsin's Brown County District as its new charity partner for 2011.
Junior Achievement joins Cerebral Palsy Inc. and Family Services as the recipients of funds raised by 2011 Cellcom Green Bay Marathon events, which take place May 13-15. The charities operate on three-year terms, with one new charity added each year and one exiting. Junior Achievement was selected from a group of 19 applicants. More

Josh Furlow has been named senior vice president of operations for Competitor Group, Inc. effective immediately. Furlow will oversee the planning, operations and logistics for the company's Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series. Furlow previously served as vice president of planning & operations for AEG Sports where he managed the operations, vendors and budgets for the Bay to Breakers 12k and the Amgen Tour of California, the largest cycling race in the United States.
