Triathlon America Launched by Industry Leaders
Triathlon America
A coalition of triathlon business leaders announced this week the creation of Triathlon America, an organization to promote the interests of the triathlon business community. The membership organization will advocate for the interests of triathlon businesses, provide educational and informative programs, and encourage increased participation in the sport. Triathlon America's first initiative is an annual conference to be held on February 27-March 1, 2011 in La Jolla, CA. More

Ousted USATF CEO Files Lawsuit

Boston Marathon Sells Out in Eight Hours

Runners around the world rushed Monday to register online for the 2011 Boston Marathon, filling the race's 20,000 available spots for qualifiers by day's end and leaving the Boston Athletic Association stunned. The record-setting eight hour, three minute registration - a stark contrast to last year's nine weeks and three days - left an untold number of qualified runners without a coveted bib number for next April. "We knew it was going to be a rapid response,'' said Guy Morse, the BAA's executive director. "We just didn't know how rapid." More

New Balance Signs as New Falmouth Road Race Title Sponsor

New Balance announced today the signing of a multi-year title sponsorship deal with the historic Falmouth Road Race, to be renamed the New Balance Falmouth Road Race. The company will serve as the title sponsor and official footwear and apparel sponsor starting with the 39th annual race, which will be held next August 14. More 

China's Li-Ning Enters U.S. Running Market
The Oregonian
Chinese sporting goods company Li-Ning introduced its first running shoe for the U.S. market this week.  The Fremont, an entry in the minimalist category, will be first available in selected running specialty stores in the Pacific Northwest.  Li-Ning's U.S offices are in Portland. More

 

Court Upholds Ruling in Triathlon Wrongful Death Suit

A ruling in favor of the organizers of the 2006 Florida Ironman competition was upheld by the 11th Circuit Court Appeals on Monday. In 2009, a federal jury found North American Sports Inc. and USA Triathlon were not responsible for the death of Barney Rice, who collapsed in the Gulf of Mexico during the swimming portion of the 2006 event. BMW Agrees to Berlin Marathon Title Sponsor Deal

Rodale to Fold Mountain Bike into Bicycling Magazine

ITU World Cup Returning to Edmonton in July

The Province

After a three-year absence, the International Triathlon Union World Cup is returning to Edmonton. The recently launched Edmonton Triathlon Academy and ITU announced a five-year contract Wednesday afternoon that will return the World Cup to Hawrelak Park, site of the 2001 world championships and World Cup races from 2002-07, starting July 2-3, 2011. Town Provides $32K Prize Money for Gateway to the Bay Tri

In support of the Gateway to the Bay triathlon hosted in the city of Kemah, TX,  the town's city council on a vote of four to one will provide $32,000 as a prize purse for the 2011 event. The event will take place April 1-3, 2011 in the heart of the city along and around the Kemah Boardwalk. More

Shimano, Pearl Izumi to Combine Outside Sales Reps

Shimano and Pearl Izumi will align their outside rep organizations into a combined initiative to increase the level of service they provide to their dealers. Currently, 66 outside reps represent Shimano and Pearl Izumi, along with the other companies they represent. Jeff Young of Shimano American said the new outside rep force will consist of 45 to 50 outside reps that will be primarily focused on the two brands. More

Racetrackers Enterprises Inc has announced the opening of a west coast office in San Francisco.  The addition gives the company four offices with the others in Alabama, North Carolina and Indiana. The new office, led by Andrew Backs, will focus on running and triathlon events on the west coast. 

 

Medical Center to Sponsor Redondo Beach Super Bowl Runs

The Kaiser Permanente South Bay Medical Center has agreed to be the presenting sponsor of the 2011 Redondo Beach Super Bowl Sunday 10K and 5K races.  The event will be run for the 33rd time on February 6.

 

Maryland County to Host New Duathlon Event

RipIt! Events and Maryland's Howard County have scheduled the county's first duathlon, DuThe2, for next August 7.  The event will include a two-mile run, 26-mile bike, and four-mile run. More

Darris Blackford has signed a three-year contract, with an optional fourth year extension, to serve as race director of the Nationwide Better Health Columbus Marathon and 1/2 Marathon. Blackford, 47, of Columbus, assumed the role of interim race director in April for the 2010 event, which was held on October 17. He previously served as its marketing director and pace team organizer. 

 

Nick Legan, a veteran cycling ProTour mechanic, has joined VeloNews as technical editor for the magazine and website, Competitor Group announced Wednesday.  The head mechanic for the 2008 U.S. Olympic team, Legan most recently worked for RadioShack at the Tour de France and the Amgen Tour of California. He also has worked for Garmin-Slipstream, CSC, Toyota-United, Health Net and Ofoto.

 

Jessica Klodnicki has been hired by Mizuno USA, Inc. as the company's vice president of brand marketing and management.  The job will focus on enhancing brand awareness and value and strengthening Mizuno's position as an industry leader.

As a Running Specialty Sales Representative, you will represent New Balance accessories, apparel, and footwear to Running Specialty Dealers and achieve sales objectives and quotas within an assigned territory. You will educate dealers' staff on product benefits, features, and technologies and you will explain basic biomechanics, ankle and foot anatomy, gait analysis, and shoe fitting techniques. You will facilitate product distribution, wear-testing and formal feedback gathering from Running Specialty Dealers as you serve as technical liaison for internal product teams. In this role, you will be responsible for booking orders, assisting with the management of each dealer's NB inventory, establishing model stock size roll for designated products, and developing processes to regularly replenish inventory.
