USA Cycling to Offer Online Registration System
USA Cycling
USA Cycling announced this week that it will offer the online event registration system it has used for national championship events for all USA Cycling sanctioned events in 2011. The system, which is designed to streamline the process and lower the cost of online registration, will be available to USA Cycling promoters beginning December 1. More
Running USA Issues Report on Largest U.S. Road Races

In Part IV of Running USA's State of the Sport 2010 report, the organization lists the largest races in the country in 2009. Comparison with 2000 shows the growth of race participation in the past ten years. In 2009, the Top 100 U.S. timed race list accounted for just over 1.3 million finishers compared to 922,500 finishers in 2000, up 43%. More
Interbike Working to Sell Show Changes to Retailers

Interbike marketing staff will hit the road this fall to promote the show's new Anaheim venue and August schedule to retailers. "We'll be doing more to promote this show than we have in many years," Interbike show director Andy Tompkins said, recognizing that education is needed to inform retailers on the benefits of the show's new early August timeframe. WTC Signs Ironman TV Deal with Australian Broadcasters

World Triathlon Corporation has announced a five-year Australian broadcast rights partnership with Network Ten and One HD. The agreement between World Triathlon Corporation and Network Ten provides Network Ten and One HD with the exclusive Australian free-to-air broadcast rights for Ironman triathlon from 2010 through to 2015. The Ford Ironman World Championship, Ironman Australia and Ironman Western Australia events will be among the twelve one-hour programs aired exclusively each year on Network Ten's high definition sports channel, One HD. Georgia Marathon Signs Publix to Title Sponsorship Deal

Publix is the new title sponsor for the Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon. The announcement was made Tuesday. Publix has a two-year contract with the race, which last year had about 12,600 finishers. It replaces ING, which had been the title sponsor of the race since its inception in 2007 but decided to end its sponsorship. "The timing was good," Publix spokeswoman Brenda Reid said. "We're looking at expanding our reach into the race and running community." More
Toronto Mayoral Candidate Critical of Marathon Road Closures

Mayoral race frontrunner Rob Ford said he wants to take marathons off Toronto streets and into the parks after last weekend's Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon closed a number of downtown roads. He said the marathons could be held in Toronto parks such as High Park or Downsview Park, and on bike paths. "Every year, we have the same problem over and over again," he told CTV News. "People just say: 'Oh well, it's a marathon. We're just shutting down the city." More

Charleston Distance Run to Keep 15 Mile Distance

The Charleston Distance Run committee on Monday night voted down a proposal to change the 15-mile race to a half-marathon. Race director Aaron Allred had suggested a half-marathon as a way of reversing a decades-long decline in the race's participation and cited a nationwide increase in the popularity of half-marathons. But the committee chose to keep the 38-year-old event as it is - the nation's only 15-mile race with a reputation for a grueling six-mile stretch of hills. More

SRDC Purchases Phidippides Encino

Specialty Retail Development Company (SRDC), a multi-store Fleet Feet Sports franchise, has announced the purchase of Phidippides Encino. Established in 1980 by Charlie and Ava Hoover and Craig Chambers, Phidippides Encino was at the forefront of the first running boom and has been "continuously setting the highest standards for our industry," SRDC managing director Tom Raynor said. Trey Barnes, a long time Fleet Feet Sports employee, will head the operations of the store and its transition to being a Fleet Feet Sports franchise.

The Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon is under new ownership. The sale was announced Monday morning by title sponsor Christie Clinic after previous owner and marathon director Mark Knutson, who runs a business in North Dakota, passed the event on to seven local buyers. More

Jack Staph, the executive director of the Rite Aid Cleveland Marathon, has been selected for the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame. Staph helped create the first Cleveland Marathon in 1978. In 2001, his Cleveland Marathon Inc. bought the race when it was in risk of closing and has since grown participation by 200 percent in the last eight years.
Reid Swanson and Tory Jackson have been hired by GU Energy Labs, In his new position as , Swanson has been named director of sales and will be responsible for continuing the company's aggressive growth plan and oversee the development of new sales channels and opportunities.
