USA Triathlon Announces Selection Plans for 2012 Olympic Team
USA Triathlon
USA Triathlon has announced that the selection events for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games will be the International Triathlon Union (ITU) London World Championship Series event on August 6-7, 2011, and a to-be-determined ITU World Cup or World Championship Series event between March 1-May 31, 2012. Any remaining spots following these two events will be filled at the discretion of the USAT Elite Athlete Selection Committee. More
WTC Changes Photography Access to Ironman Championships
Ironman.com World Triathlon Corporation has announced changes to the on-course media photography access for this year's Ford Ironman World Championship and Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3.
EnduraPix.com will launch the first week of October to offer high quality on-course imagery and, in its first year, to feature photos from both world championship events for purchase. Motorcycle and vehicle access to the bike and run courses will be limited to EnduraPix photographers only, however WTC will continue to offer a press truck for a limited number of credentialed photographers. Falmouth Seeking New Title Sponsor to Replace CIGNA

The Falmouth Road Race will be seeking a new title sponsor for the 39th running in 2011. CIGNA, a Philadelphia-based global health services company and title sponsor of the Cape Cod race since 2006, has informed the race directors that it will not be returning. CIGNA's contractual agreement ended after the race on August 15. More
Tour de Toona Director Hopeful of Expanded 2011 Schedule

Three years ago, the Tour de Toona was the largest seven-day pro-am cycling race in North America and the only race in the country to have equal days of racing for men and women. Last year, it was canceled completely, and despite plans to once again be a stage race this year, the event will be held only as a one-day criterium August 29 in downtown Altoona, PA. Yet race director Larry Bilotto is still hopeful that next year's race will be at least three or four days and eventually expand back to a full seven. More
Capitola to Discuss Idea of Hosting 2011 Tour of California Stage

The California coastal city of Capitola may be small, with a population of 10,000 in two square miles, but local business owners are intrigued by the idea of hosting the Amgen Tour of California cycling competition next May. City manager Jamie Goldstein said he is researching the host role in the wake of Santa Cruz opting not to host the race for a third consecutive year. He expects the City Council will discuss the options September 9. More
Portland Marathon Supports Police Mounted Patrol

The Portland Marathon has named Friends of Portland's Mounted Patrol an official charity of the October 10 event, and is placing an engraved image of a mounted patrol officer and horse on the back of the medal for the half-marathon. Les Smith, event director of the Portland Marathon, said that listing the group as an official charity will help draw the public's attention to the mounted police program. The marathon has already donated $5,000 to support the mounted patrol. More |

Outer Banks Marathon Organizers Get $60K Tourism Grant

Running races sponsored by the Dare Education Foundation and organized by Outer Banks Sporting Events scored the lion's share of grants handed out last week by the Dare (NC) County Tourism Board. The tourism board awarded $60,000 to the Dare County Education Foundation and Outer Banks Sporting Events. The events company was spawned from the success of the Outer Banks Marathon, which also has been sponsored with grants from the tourism board in past years. More
Canada's Spec Performance to New RFID Timekeeping System

Quebec's Spec Performance, a swimming specialty store and sports event organizer has recently announced that after three pilot projects done in June of this year, they have decided to go ahead and use their newly developed RFID timekeeping system at all their sports events such as swimming races and triathlons. West Coast Bank to Sponsor Oregon Wine Country Half

West Coast Bank has agreed to be a major prize and award sponsor of the first Oregon Wine Country Half Marathon in Oregon's Yamhill County. The race will be run on September 5. More
Pasadena Marathon Signs Fitness Club Sponsor
The Kaiser Permanente Pasadena Marathon has announced that Equinox, a fitness club company, will be a sponsor of the 2011 race. As part of the sponsorship, members of Equinox will receive special rates on registration for the February 20 event.
Leslie Jordan, Inc. Switches to All Recycled Packaging In the company's continued efforts to become more eco-friendly, Portland-based apparel manufacturer Leslie Jordan, Inc. has decided to use 100% recycled packaging materials for shipping its performance shirts to customers. The cartons will be constructed from corrugated recycles, and the inner poly bags will be made from recycled plastic. "It's gratifying to know that our quality products will be delivered in environmentally responsible packaging," said Jordan.
ASICS America Acquires North American Distributor
ASICS America Corporation announced last week that it will acquire its North American distributor, Agence Quebec Plus Ltd.. ASICS Corporation's board of directors has approved the acquisition of AQP as a subsidiary of ASICS America Corporation, effective August 31, 2010. Denis Custeau will maintain his current role as president and general manager. The internal structure will remain in place and the sales force will continue to be independent contractors. More
Galveston to Host New Marathon, Half Marathon

The Galveston Mardi Gras Marathon and Half Marathon, which will debut February 20 in the Texas gulf coast city, will be the first time a marathon has been run in Galveston since the mid-1990s. "We just thought that Galveston needed a marathon again because it's been so long, and there's been so much controversy about the Houston marathon," race organizer Jana Landry said. "We've been working since April to get this off the ground." More |

Alison Turcotte has been named by Landmark Sport Group as race director of the Mississauga Marathon, Twenty Valley Niagara Wine Country Run and Labour Day Oakville Half Marathon.
James Hilyard has been hired by Performance Bicycle as vice president of visual merchandising. Hilyard will be responsible for guiding store design and guest experience for the bike retailer.
Beth Jahnigen Pappas, the sports coordinator and mountain bike series race director for the Vail Recreation District since 2008, has been hired by Vail-based public relations firm Peeples Ink PR, LTD as its senior client services manager. |
