B of A Announces Marathon Marketing Campaign, Economic Impact

Bank of America has launched a new integrated marketing campaign for the 2010 Bank of America Chicago Marathon and released results of the latest economic impact report, which found that the event generates nearly $150 million for the local economy. Additionally, more than $10 million is expected to be raised in connection with the 2010 event, benefitting more than 150 nonprofit organizations, the largest charity field in race history. The marketing campaign, entitled "10.10.10: The Date to Motivate," features 10 inspirational Chicago athletes, their motivations for participating, and the impact they create.  More 
 
Saucony Signs Four Year Deal with Seattle Marathon

Saucony, Inc, a supplier of performance athletic footwear and apparel,  announced this week its four-year exclusive footwear and apparel sponsorship of the Seattle Marathon. The 2010 race, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Seattle Marathon, takes place on November 28 at the historic Seattle Center in downtown Seattle. More
 
Ironman Canada Signs Deal to Stay in Penticton

The Ironman Canada race will be held in Penticton, BC for at least the next five years. The deal between the city and Ironman Canada was announced earlier this week at Penticton City Council. "It's a five year agreement and the in-kind contribution is the same as what we have provided in previous years as approved ion the 2010 budget," says Penticton CAO Dennis Back. More

Marine Corps Marathon Creates Event for First Time Marathoners

To celebrate the commitment of 11,000 first time marathoners and welcome them to the world of marathoning, the Marine Corps Marathon has created "MCM First Timers Opening Night" on October 29 at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.  The evening's program will include a special welcome and instructional video from Comcast SportsNet, the MCM Expert Bar to answer questions and provide event details, music and giveaways. Tables will be set up by expected finish time for runners to mix and mingle with other runners at the same pace. More
 
Giro to Launch New Line of Cycling Shoes

Giro has announced plans to broaden its product portfolio with a new line of men's and women's cycling shoes set to launch this fall. "We are positioned to launch a collection of high end cycling footwear that includes road and mountain shoes from men and women retailing from $199 to $349," Paul Harrington, CEO of Easton Bell Sports, Giro's parent company, told financial analysts. Santa Cruz Decides Against Hosting 2011 Tour of California Stage

Despite the success of this year's AMGEN Tour of California stop in Santa Cruz, Mayor Mike Rotkin has decided that the city can no longer afford to host the cycling event, and has withdrawn from having it pass through Santa Cruz in 2011. "It's a great event, we love to see it happen, we just don't have the staff time to make it happen," said Rotkin. More
 
USA Triathlon Honored as One of Best Places to Work

USAT was selected as one of two runners up for businesses with 16-50 employees.  In a city known for its sports organizations, USAT was the only one selected as a "best place to work" in any category. Houston Marathon Announces Lottery Results

The Houston Marathon Committee on Monday announced the names of the runners selected to participate in the 2011 race. More than 29,000 runners registered for the event. Using a new lottery system, officials selected 22,000 athletes for the marathon and half marathon races. More
 
Boulder Mountain Tour Signs Deal with SWIX Sports

SWIX Sports has agreed to be the title sponsor of the 36th Boulder Mountain Tour cross country ski race.  The race will be held on February 5.  The race also announced that it will offer $13,000 in prize money. More 
 
Morgantown Considers Joining USRA Half Marathon Series

The Greater Morgantown Convention and Visitors Bureau is working closely with the USRA Half Marathon Series to bring a new half marathon race to Morgantown, WV. Organizers are looking at fall 2011 for the race. More
 
Colorado High School Mountain Bike Series Announces Dates

USA Cycling Adopts News Cyclo-Cross Rules

USA Cycling has agreed to follow new rules for the upcoming cyclo-cross season mirroring those adopted by the UCI for races on US soil.
The new regulations allow for feeding during some races, change the handling of lapped riders and modify some technical regulations on equipment and course design.More
 
Air Force Marathon Races Sell Out, Top 10,000
 
For the first time, the Air Force Marathon has maxed out its marathon and half marathon races.  This year's event already set a new record last week when it surpassed the longtime goal of 10,000 registered runners.  
"Registrations have just been flooding in this year," said Molly Louden, Air
Force Marathon director. "We have increased our race caps in every category. The demand has been unprecedented."   The marathon will be held on September 18.
 
Wisconsin Town Still Undecided on Allowing New Marathon

The Dell Prairie Town Board unanimously approved an ordinance and permit application last week regulating special events on town roads, but whether the Wisconsin Dells Marathon and Half Marathon scheduled October 24 in Dell Prairie goes on has yet to be determined. More

Olathe Marathon Renamed Oz Marathon

Next year's Olathe Marathon has been renamed the Oz Marathon.
Ashley Holverson, vice president of the Olathe Chamber of Commerce's Convention & Visitors Bureau, said the change was made following months of discussion about how to make the annual Kansas race more fun and attractive to participants across the country. More
 
Washington State Adds Winthrop Marathon to Schedule

North central Washington has lost one marathon, but gained another. The annual Lake Chelan Shore to Shore marathon, originally set for September 18, has been canceled. The new Winthrop Marathon will take place September 26, however. The Winthrop Marathon is taking a more rural approach than other events, with the course starting in the Okanogan National Forest and finishing in downtown Winthrop. More

Scott Davis, one of the world's top track and field stadium announcers, a statistician, and meet director, died yesterday at his home in Cerritos, CA. He was 67.  Davis had a more than 30-year career as an announcer at UCLA, USATF Championships, NCAA Championships, IAAF World Championships, and many high-level invitational meets, especially in the U.S. and Japan.  He co-founded the Federation of American Statisticians of Track (FAST) and produced its annual resource book.  He directed the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, CA. More
