Life Time Fitness Purchases Leadville Trail Race Series

Minnesota-based Life Time Fitness has purchased the mountain bike and trail running events of Colorado's Leadville Trail 100 Race Series, race founder Ken Chlouberit announced late last week. Life Time Fitness had been title sponsor of Leadville Trail 100 MTB race in 2008 and 2009. In addition to the mountain bike race, the company will direct the other races in the series, including the Leadville Trail 100, the Leadville Silver Rush 50-Mile Mountain Bike Race and the 12/24 Hours of Leadville Mountain Bike Race. Nike Unveils New Store Concept in Santa Monica

Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed Against Oshkosh Tri Organizers

The family of an Oshkosh woman who died during the Oshkosh Area Triathlon last summer filed a wrongful death lawsuit seeking unspecified damages for the death, claiming the organizers, Midwest Sports Events, failed to train lifeguards and provide adequate emergency medical care. More

NBC, Active Launch Biggest Loser Event Challenge Series 
 
NBC's "The Biggest Loser" and The Active Network, Inc.'s Active.com have announced the launch of The Biggest Loser Event Challenge, a series of nationwide 5K and one-mile events designed to inspire Americans to get moving. The first Biggest Loser Event Challenge will take place on September 25 in Myrtle Beach, SC with 16 more events to be announced for 2011. More
 
Dirty Trail Half Donates $23K to Deschutes Land Trust

Race Promoter Confident Purdue Half Marathon Will Be Held

Despite local leaders demanding that advertisement for a running race cease and desist, race organizer Dean Reinke is confident that his planned Home of Purdue Half Marathon will make its debut on October 24. Speaking to the Journal & Courier's editorial board Tuesday, Reinke said that support from more than 800 registered runners and interest from three communities is keeping the race afloat -- even if it means conducting the event outside Tippecanoe County. Palm Beaches Marathon Reduces Prize Money
Palm Beach Post
Florida's Palm Beaches Marathon this December has decided to reduce its prize money for the 2010 race to $2000, $1,000 each for the winning man and woman in the marathon. Last year's event spread $6,700 among the top placers in both the marathon and half-marathon.  More
 
Long-Time El Paso Race Changes Distance, Date

El Paso's GECU TransMountain Challenge, in its 33rd year, has decided to increase from a 20K race to a half marathon and will be moving from the spring to the fall. The race, which gains over 2,000 feet in elevation, will be held on October 10.  It previously had been run in March. More
 
Murfreesboro's 'Middle Half' Sells Out

The Murfreesboro Half Marathon, presented by Middle Tennessee Medical Center, reached its cap of 2,250 registrants Monday in just 101 days: 67 days before the event. Last year's race capped at 2,000 runners 45 days in advance. More

Kevin Wulff has been named ASICS America's chief operating officer effective immediately.  Wulff will also add president to his title beginning on February 1, 2011 when current COO and president Rich Bourne will transition into retirement.  Wulff's previous experience includes president and CEO of San Diego-based Pony International (2007-2010), president and CEO of American Sporting Goods (2004-2007), and CEO and chairman of the Women's Tennis Association (2001-2003).
 
Jim Tompkins, the former president and COO of New Balance Athletic Shoe Inc., has been hired as president of El Paso-based Spira Footwear.  He had been a consultant with Spira since leaving New Balance in 2009.
 
Dayton Morinaga, a 20-year veteran of the Honolulu Advertiser, has been hired by XTERRA to the newly created position of marketing and communications director. Morinaga will lead the media relations and marketing efforts for the XTERRA Trail Run Series, distribute the weekly "XTERRA Trail Mix" newsletter, and write pieces for and edit the quarterly XTERRA Planet Magazine.
 
Jerry Friesen has been selected by the Barbados Tourism Authority to organize and manage the 2010 Run Barbados Series.  Friesen, a veteran race director from Ontario, Canada, helped develop the Subaru Niagara Running Series and the Cruise to Run Caribbean, and Cruise to Run Alaska.
 
John Buleza has been named by Performance Bicycle as its vice president of direct marketing.
 
John Trott has been appointed by Puma North America to be vice president of Puma retail.  Trott will oversee all Puma North America retail divisions, including Puma Stores, Puma Outlet Stores, and Shop.PUMA.com.
 
Jennifer Straughan, the race director of the Missoula Marathon, was honored last month by Destination Missoula as the recepient of The Jay Award. Straughan was recognized for the marathon's success in boosting tourism in the Missoula, MT area.
 
Dana Carson has joined Reynolds Cycling as its new international sales manager. Carson will be responsible for Reynolds Cycling sales in the international market outside of the European Union. He will also handle sales for Pacific Rims outside of the European Union.
 
Chris Dinneen has been hired by Catalyst Communication, a custom publishing and direct mail company for cycling, snowsports and the outdoor industries, as a new sales and account manager. Dinneen comes to Catalyst after 10 years at VeloGear, where he was the general manager.

The job requires expert editing, proofing, writing and time-management skills as well as the ability to work within a tight budget and with a small, but talented staff.
