Major Pro Stage Racing Returns to Colorado in 2011

Cycling champion Lance Armstrong and Colorado Governor Bill Ritter officially announced plans yesterday for an elite, seven-stage international cycling race to take place next summer. The Quiznos Pro Challenge, to be held on August 22-28, will be the first pro cycling event of significance in Colorado since the Coors Classic, which ran from 1979-88.  Medalist Sports, which puts on the Tour of California in May, will organize the Colorado tour. More

Rock 'n' Roll Series Expands to Providence, Savannah

The Competitor Group has announced two new markets for the 2011 Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series. The Rock 'n' Roll Providence Half Marathon will take place on August 7 and the Rock 'n' Roll Savannah Marathon & Half Marathon is scheduled for November 5.  "This is a significant step for the Competitor Group to expand the reach of our brand nationally with two of the most well-known destinations on the east coast," said Peter Englehart, CEO of CGI. The addition of the two races increases Competitor Group's portfolio of national events to 45 with over 400,000 participants expected in 2011. More
 
RUSA Report Part III - U.S. 2009 Race Participation Passes 10M

Running USA's State of the Sport - Part III shows that road running continued its boom in 2009 with another record year of participation. The sport grew to an estimated 10,290,000 finishers in more than 17,000 U.S. road races, a record high. By contrast, according to Running USA, there were just over 3.9 million finishers in U.S. road races twenty years earlier (1989).  More
 
ASICS America Reports Continued Growth in 2Q

ASICS America Corporation reported this week that its second quarter (April-June) continued the double-digit growth achieved in the first quarter.
The solid growth can be attributed to an almost 20 percent increase in the apparel and accessories categories, particularly team sports. Footwear continues to maintain strong numbers with 15 percent growth. As reported by The NPD Group, a retail tracking service, ASICS continues to strengthen its number two market position in running footwear with 21 percent growth for the first six months of 2010.  This growth rate was 52 percent higher than for the running footwear category as a whole.

2010 Boston Marathon Generates $4.2M for Local Charities

John Hancock's Boston Marathon Fundraising Program raised a record $4.2 million for Boston-area non-profit and community service organizations during the 114th running of the historic race. This represents a 16 percent increase from 2009 and a 30 percent increase from 2008. More
 
University, City Leaders Oppose Home of Purdue Half Marathon

Purdue University leaders and the Lafayette and West Lafayette mayors issued a letter Tuesday demanding the organizer of the October 24 Home of Purdue Half Marathon stop advertising local partnerships. The letter sent to Dean Reinke Sports Group also said the race will not be allowed on public properties inside the Lafayette and West Lafayette city limits. Reached by phone Tuesday, Reinke said he's moving forward with his plans. He said 816 runners have signed up for the event, including Purdue alumni and runners from 25 states. More
 
2010 Portland Marathon Events Sell Out
 
The 2010 Portland Marathon and its inaugural Portland Marathon Half have sold out, event director Les Smith announced this week. The 39th Portland Marathon sold out at 10,000 runners and the half marathon sold at 3,000.  Both races will be run on October 10.

K-Swiss Reports Losses in 2nd Quarter

California-based athletic shoe company K-Swiss Inc. today reported a net loss for the second quarter of 2010 of $14,545,000, compared with a net loss of $11,497,000 for the prior-year period. Results for the second quarter of 2010 include a one-time charge of $3,320,000 for recognition of the net present value of the future purchase price of Palladium SAS.  Net loss for the six months ended June 30, 2010, was $19,243,000 compared with a net loss of $12,590,000 for the six months ended June 30, 2009. The company also reported drops in international and domestic revenue for the same period. More

Florida Gulf Island to Host New Triathlon

The Longboat Key, Lido Key, St. Armands Key Chamber of Commerce has announced plans for the Florida gulf island's first ever triathlon, The Longboat Key Triathlon, on October 24. Atlantic City Marathon Organizers Offer $25K Jackpot Drawing

Organizers have decided to offer a $25,000 jackpot in hopes of attracting more people to the 52nd running of the Atlantic City Marathon. Any runner who enters the event, which offers races as short as two miles in addition to the marathon, is eligible to win, according to Brian Barry, director of Development & Fundraising at Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center of Margate. More 
 
Marathon Organizers Ask for Quick Action on Ordinance

The Wisconsin Dells Marathon and Half Marathon planned mostly on town of Dell Prairie roads on October 24 may still go on after its organizers and other proponents asked the Dell Prairie Town Board to quickly adopt a new ordinance for special events permits and then approve a permit specifically for the races at a meeting last week. 500 Festival to Host Mini-Marathon Training Series at NCAA Hall

The 500 Festival announced this week that it has entered into a multi-year agreement to hold the 500 Festival Training Series, presented by OrthoIndy at the NCAA Hall of Champions in downtown Indianapolis. The Training Series features runs at 5K, 10K, and 15K to help runners prepare for the May 7 OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon. More

Shawn O'Shea has been named by K2 Sports to the newly created position of director of apparel for its Zoot Sports division. O'Shea has more than 14 years of experience in the performance apparel market, most recently at Under Armour. He also has worked for Pearl Izumi and The North Face.
 
Alan Culpepper, a two-time Olympian and owner of a Louisville, CO running specialty store, has been hired by Competitor Group as a director of operations for its Rock 'n' Roll race series. Among his assignments, Culpepper will be working on this October's Rock 'n' Roll Denver Marathon.  His store has been sold to Runner's Roost. More 
 
Josh Feazell has been hired by Hincapie Sportswear as retail sales representative for the brand in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.  Feazell will represent Hincapie for retail cycling apparel and accessory sales to independent bicycle dealers and sell Hincapie custom cycling clothing to clubs and teams in the territory.
 
Dean Severson has been hired as creative director at Bicycle Retailer and Industry News.  Severson has owned and run his own design firm, Haute House Creations, for the past 10 years.
 
John Atwood, formerly Rodale Books executive editor, has named deputy editor of Runner's World. Atwood will write and assign stories, top-edit most features, and develop book ideas.
 
Charlie Butler has been promoted by Runner's World to the position of executive editor.  He previously was a features editor at the magazine.

The editor will plan the editorial calendar; manage a budget; lead a team of freelance writers; edit all content of the magazine; write articles and blog posts; source photos; and collaborate with the art director on design. The job requires expert editing, proofing, writing and time-management skills as well as the ability to work within a tight budget and with a small, but talented staff. Must be highly organized, creative, passionate about running and living a healthy active lifestyle and a team player.  The ideal candidate will have at least five years of experience inmagazine publishing, preferably at a women's lifestyle or fitness-related publication; senior editorial management experience; knowledge of topics including training for races, fitness, nutrition and women's health; and be comfortable working with InDesign and other graphics software.
