Philly Tri Alters Olympic Distance Race After Sprint Race Death

The Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon dropped the swim portion of its Olympic distance race on Sunday, replacing it with a 5K run, after a competitor in the Saturday sprint triathlon race went missing during the swim leg.  Police recovered the body of the lost athlete on Sunday. More  
 
Marine Corp Marathon Signs GE as Presenting Sponsor
 
The Marine Corps Marathon announced this week that GE will be a presenting sponsor of the 35th Marine Corps Marathon. "We are proud to support a great event, service members, families and veterans -- the Marine Corps Marathon," said John Rice, GE vice chairman and president and CEO of GE Technology Infrastructure. "We support and respect all those who devote their lives to serving the United States. We look forward to participating and celebrating with them at this year's marathon."  The race will be held on October 31. More
 
ITU Awards 2012 Grand Final to New Zealand

The International Triathlon Union has confirmed that Triathlon New Zealand will host the 2012 Dextro Energy ITU World Champs Series Grand Final with the New Zealand bid chosen over others from Asia, the Middle East and Europe. The Grand Final will come to Auckland in October 2012. Government and economic development agencies pledged $2 million in support for the bid. More
 
ING NYC Marathon Creates Community Charity Program

New York Road Runners president and CEO Mary Wittenberg has announced the goal of raising more than $24 million through its new ING NYC Marathon 2010 community charity program representing 100 charities in addition to its strong roster of gold, silver and bronze charity partners. "The ING New York City Marathon is about more than running," said Wittenberg. "The event will make a tremendous impact not only on the runners and the city, but also on the many lives that will be affected through the money raised as part of the charity program." More

PPD Signs Title Sponsorship Deal with Beach2Battleship Tri

PPD, Inc. announced this week that it will serve as title sponsor of the third annual Beach2Battleship Iron Distance Triathlon, an internationally recognized competition to be held in Wrightsville Beach and Wilmington, N.C., on November 13. The event has been renamed the PPD Beach2Battleship Triathlon.  PPD is a contract research organization,  providing drug discovery, development and lifecycle management services. More
 
USA Triathlon Club Membership Passes 800
 
After hitting 700 official clubs in April, USA Triathlon quickly reached another milestone in that category, as the organization reached 800 official clubs for the first time this week. Currently, USAT lists 802 official clubs nationwide. More
 
IMG Sets Date for New San Diego Triathlon

Auto Road Company Takes Mt. Washington Race In-House

The Mt. Washington Auto Road company, the private organization that manages the ultra-steep 7.6-mile Auto Road where the Mt. Washington Road Race is held, has made the race an official in-house operation of the company. The organization will maintain overall ownership and supervision of the event, which will be held for the 51st time next June 18, and has contracted with DMSE Sports, Inc. to produce the race. More
 
Clif Bar Sells 20% of Stock to Employees

Clif Bar & Company, the maker of all-natural and organic food and performance nutrition for athletes, has announced the selling of family-owned common stock to its employees through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). Employees through the ESOP own 20 percent of the company, while husband and wife owners -- Gary Erickson and Kit Crawford -- retain the remaining 80 percent.  More
 
Big Sur Marathon Earns CRS's Gold Certification
 
The Big Sur International Marathon has earned Gold Certification for its greening efforts in the 2010 race. The certification was awarded by the Council for Responsible Sport, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising the level of environment and social responsibility in sporting events. The Big Sur Marathon achieved a record 91.67 percent diversion rate on its recycling and food waste programs.  Of the 5.4 tons of waste generated, 4.95 tons were diverted from the landfill. The marathon partnered with Athletes for a Fit Planet, Ecology Action, The Offset Project, the Monterey Regional Waste Management District (MRWMD) and Waste Management. 
Wheaties Fuel Named Official Ironman Cereal

Wheaties Fuel has been named the official cereal of the Ironman Triathlon.
General Mills Inc., maker of Wheaties Fuel, will use national television, print and online advertising to support its role as official cereal of the Ironman Triathlon. The brand will have a presence at upcoming Ironman and Ironman 70.3 events with signage and sampling stations. More
 
Performance Bicycling Adding New Stores

Performance Bicycle will open two new retail locations and relocate and remodel two other locations in Pennsylvania and California. The new and remodeled locations, all of which will open in July, join 90 Performance stores nationwide. The new and remodeled stores will be in Woodland Hills, Santa Monica, and Oxnard, CA and Allentown, PA. More
 
Somnio Running Moves to Company Sales Reps

Somnio Running has moved from using independent sales reps in different parts of the country to hiring its own sales reps who will focus on both the specialty running and comfort shoe markets in all regions across the country.  "The new structure is critical to continuing our growth and to provide the service and training for our dealers, our rapid expansion over the last year and half allows us to make this change," said Somnio President Sean Sullivan. The new sales force will be lead by national sales manager Jamie LaChance who previously worked for Nike, adidas and Saucony.

Colorado Cyclists Protest Town's Bike Ban

More than 100 cyclists gathered on the west steps of the Colorado State Capitol early this week to voice their disapproval of a bike ban in Black Hawk, a small gambling town in the state that's made headlines for its new ordinance. Black Hawk, a historic mining town that's the least populous city in the state, began enforcing the ordinance and fining cyclists $68 for riding through streets. More

Dave McGillivray, BAA Boston Marathon race director and president of DMSE Sports, Inc., has received the Fleet Feet, Inc. Lifetime Commitment to Running Award, which recognizes an industry leader who has shown career-long dedication to the business and sport of running.  Fleet Feet Inc. CEO Tom Raynor presented the award to McGillivray at a ceremony in San Diego on June 24.
 
Marlene Wright has been named marketing and media director for Twin Cities In Motion (TCM).  Wright comes to TCM after working over five years as the Vice President of Marketing & Communications for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities.  Prior to that she was an inaugural member of the Minnesota Wild where she served as the Director of Community Relations.

Bob Teschek of Granite State Race Services has retired as the race director of the Mt. Washington Road Race in Pinkham Notch, NH.  Teschek had been the race director of the uphill race since 1982.
