The Woodlands Approves New Ironman Texas Race

After a presentation by Ironman's chief operations officer Steve Meckfessel to the boards of The Woodlands Convention and Visitor's Bureau and the The Woodlands Township Board of Directors, both bodies Wednesday evening voted to approve the creation of the Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas, which will be held on May 21, 2011 in The Woodlands. World Triathlon Corporation has selected Keith Jordan from Austin to be the race director. More
Nike 4Q Profits Grow by 53%

Nike said yesterday that its profit rose 53% to $521.9 million for the fiscal fourth quarter that ended May 31, from $341.4 million a year earlier. Revenue forthe quartter rose almost eight percent to $5.08 billion. More
Running USA Selects San Antonio for 2011 Conference
Running USA, the trade organization for the running industry, announced this week that its 2011 conference will be held in San Antonio on Februar 13-15. The conference had been held in the San Diego area for the past six years. More
USA Triathlon Issues New Wetsuit Regulation
USA Triathlon announced this week that beginning in 2013 use of wetsuits exceeding five millimeters in thickness will not be permitted at USAT-sanctioned events. "Our board has been considering this issue and the impact it might have with our athletes for some time," said USA Triathlon CEO Skip Gilbert. "The overall feeling is that it makes perfect sense to align with the guidelines set by our international federation and multisport enthusiasts around the world. Bix 7 Comes to Aid of Cancelled Race for the Cure

A silver lining has been found for the Komen Quad-Cities Race for the Cure, which was canceled June 12 for the first time in its history because of inclement weather. Organizers of the Quad-City Times Bix 7 road race have come up with a new event that will accommodate breast cancer survivors and their supporters while also benefiting Race for the Cure programs. The Bix 7 will donate part of its proceeds to the Susan B. Komen Foundation to help offset the loss of funds that resulted from the cancellation. More

DC's Capital Criterium Returns in July

The Washington Convention and Sports Authority (WCSA) and Capital Criterium race organizers announced this week a partnership to host the 2010 Capital Criterium presented by the Washington Convention and Sports Authority. The Capital Criterium is scheduled for July 11, and is rumored to be a dress rehearsal for a possible start to the Giro d'Italia in the Nation's Capital in 2012. More
Giant Opens Cycling World Store in Denver Area

Another first-of-its-kind franchise opened in Denver's South Metro area June 19 when Giant Cycling World opened its doors in the Aspen Grove shopping center in Littleton. Although Giant is the largest bicycle brand in the world and third largest in the United States, this is the first Giant store to open in the nation. More
Tobacco Road Marathon Donates $35,000

North Carolina's Tobacco Road Marathon organizers and the race's signature sponsor, Duke Medicine, presented checks totaling $30,000 to two beneficiaries: The Triangle Rails to Trails Conservancy and the Wounded Warriors Project. Earlier in the year, marathon officials donated $5,000 to the Triangle Chapter of the American Red Cross for its Haitian relief fund. More
ACHIEVE Kids Tri Receives USA Triathlon Grant
ACHIEVE Kids Tri, Inc., a Washington, D.C., based non-profit organization that designs and implements youth-based triathlon training and fitness programs, has received a $20,000 grant from USA Triathlon to help the program expand to new regions. ACHIEVE Tri has expanded from D.C. to Houston and Waterbury, CT and is considering additional expansion. More
Carmel, Indiana to Host New Race Weekend

Carmel Road Racing Group, a newly formed event management company, is formally announcing the creation of the Carmel (IN) Marathon Championship weekend today at Carmel City Hall, with Mayor James Brainard and other city officials and elite athletes. Plans are to have marathon, half-marathon and 8K races on June 11, 2011. Organizers are bidding to have the 8K be the USATF national championship for that distance. More

The Lake Chelan (WA) Chamber of Commerce had partnered with Sunset Racing Events, which pulled its involvement because its Event Director and Owner, Keith Hughes, recently underwent surgery. Les McDonald, the founding president of the International Triathlon Union, yesterday received a continental trophy at the International Olympic Committee 2010 Women and Sport Awards, held at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland. Five continental trophies and one world trophy were given to exceptional personalities who have made a significant different to boost the development, participation and involvement of women and girls in sport around the world. McDonald, from Canada, was given the award for the Americas and was the only male to receive the award this year.
Kurt Heimbach has been hired by Brooks Sports to be the company's director of apparel merchandising. Prior to joining Brooks, Heimbach served as the global apparel director for men's and women's running, tennis, and basketball at Reebok International Ltd.. He also has worked for Nike Inc.
Brian Enge, Zoot Sports' president and former CEO, announced last week that he plans to leave the company. Enge joined the company as its CEO in 2005. Zoot was acquired by K2 Sports in January 2009. |
