Galveston Expects $4M Boost from Ironman Pro Championships

Galveston Island is expecting a $4 million jolt to the local economy when the Lone Star Triathlon Ironman 70.3 Pro Championships kicks off this weekend.  This is the fourth time Galveston has hosted the Lone Star Triathlon and the first time it's been home to the 70.3 Pro Championships. The State of Texas gave the Galveston Park Board of Trustees a $288,046 Events Trust Fund grant, which was established to attract and retain sporting events in Texas. More

Brita, Vancouver Marathon Partner on New Aid Station Operations

Brita, an international company that sells water filtration for business and personal use, is partnering with the BMO Vancouver Marathon to supply biodegradable cups, water filters, pitchers and coolers at stations along the course and at the event site. It also will collect and recycle the biodegradable cups following the marathon. More
 
Children's Hospital Raises $145K from ING Hartford Marathon

An official 2009 Marathon Charity, Connecticut Children's Hosptial, a official ING Hartford Marathon charity, has announced that it received a record $145,000 in donations from marathon participants from last fall's race. The funds will support numerous programs at Connecticut Children's including its new Clinical Care Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. Pittsburgh Marathon Sees 60% Growth in Registrations

The 2010 Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon, to be run on May 2, has registered 16,000 runners. That number breaks the previous registration record set last year at 10,000 runners.  The 60% increase in registrations far surpasses the industry average of roughly 10 percent growth. More
 
Mudathlon Series to Start in Indianapolis, Valparasio
 
The Mudathlon Series, off-road runs of 3-4 miles featuring lots of mud, fun obstacles and post-race parties, will start with two races in Indiana.  The series will begin with Mudathlon Indianapolis on June 26 and Mudathlon Chicagoland on July 24 in Valparasio, IN. More

International City Racing, the Long Beach based event management company, has changed its named to RUN Racing.  "Changing to RUN Racing just made sense," said CEO, Bob Seagren.  "We produce events that host more than 50,000 runners a year in Southern California, and we wanted to simplify messaging to our customers. People often tripped over saying our company name - especially when used as an acronym (ICR).  We strive to provide a top quality running experience and wanted to build stronger name recognition and personality around the company." 
 
Charlottesville Running Store Robbed After City's Marathon

Roughly 12 hours after the last competitor in the Charlottesville Marathon finished the annual race, the Charlottesville Running Company was robbed. Early Sunday morning, a city police officer noticed the door to the five-year-old downtown mall shop on Old Preston Avenue was open; law enforcement found that someone cracked the store's wooden doorframe, pried open a cash register to take money and checks, then fled. CSE to Organize First Run on Pimlico Race Track
 
The Maryland Jockey Club and sports marketing and event management company Corrigan Sports Enterprises, Inc. have announced the creation of the Preakness 5k to benefit the Maryland affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The race on May 8 will be the first opportunity for people to run on the historic Pimlico course. More
 
New TryCharleston Triathlon Takes Gator Precautions

Athlete concerns about alligators in the lake used for the swimming portion of the May 1 TryCharleston Triathlon has race organizers and local alligator experts saying there is next to no risk for an alligator attack at the event.
"People have been watching too much TV when it comes to alligators," said Ron Russell, owner of Gator Getter Consultants, who was hired to sweep the lake of any potentially dangerous alligators before the event. "It is perfectly safe for people to swim in that lake. I will guarantee there won't be gator problems." More

Bart Davis has been promoted to vice president, operations for Long Beach-based RUN Racing.  The company has also hired Danica Kooiman as marketing coordinator, Brian Hrybyk as expo, charity and volunteer coordinator, and Linda Vu as controller.
