2009 U.S. Marathon Participation Grows by Record 10%
Studies on U.S. marathons by Running USA and MarathonGuide.com each report record participation in 2009 with 467,000 estimated finishers. The number of finishers also represents the largest percent increase in more than 25 years.

White Rock Marathon Donates $362K to Hospital for Children

The Dallas White Rock Marathon board and sponsors presented Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children with a check for $362,000 at a ceremony Wednesday evening. The donation is the largest single year donation to the hospital in the marathon's history. Since being named the beneficiary of the race in 1997, TSRHC has received over $1.3 million in donations from the Dallas White Rock Marathon. More
NYC Triathlon to Use Lottery for 2011 Entries

Organizers of the New York City Triathlon have decided to hold a lottery for the 2011 race. Online entries for the 2010 race, to be held on July 18, sold out in six minutes. "People were really upset - I got e-mails saying they needed a Cray supercomputer to get into the race," John Korff, the race's director, said. "We want registration to be as fair as possible." More

Organizers Propose New Santa Monica Half Marathon Race

Following a successful Los Angeles Marathon that ended in downtown Santa Monica, city officials are holding talks with organizers who hope to give Santa Monica a race all its own. The proposed event would be shorter, but its 13-mile course would be entirely within Santa Monica and would exclusively benefit the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation, said Laurence Cohen, the proposed event's main organizer. Montana Adventure Race Adds Tandem Division

The 32nd Peaks to Prairie Adventure Race in Montana will add a tandem division for both its three-sport (run/bike/boat) and the two-sport (run/bike) events on April 25. The tandem athletes will run side-by-side, bike on a tandem bike and paddle a tandem canoe or kayak. The race features a nearly nine-mile run, a 44-mile bike ride and a 22-mile paddle on the Yellowstone River. More |

Green Bay Marathon Sees Drop in Charity Fundraising

Fundraising is down almost 40 percent for the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon from the same period last year, something race officials are attributing to the sagging economy. People so far have donated about $8,300 to the marathon, compared with $13,600 at this time last year, said fundraising director Jeff Poppele. The race's Run For A Reason program allows runners to raise money for one specific charity partner, or all three, by creating an online page. If they raise at least $250, they get one free race entry. More
AF Cycling Classic Steps Down from UCI Sanctioning

Organizers of the Air Force Cycling Classic's Crystal City Cup have elected to step down from UCI-sanctioning and bring the event back to its roots as a high-speed criterium. Despite the reformatting, top professional men's teams are still expected to participate in the Arlington, VA. In other personnel changes at Saucony, Fred Doyle will assume the newly created role of vice president of market development-run specialty, Timothy Knowlton has been promoted to vice president of field sales, Erin E. Flynn, formerly director of sales for Saucony Originals, will assume Knowlton's prior role as regional sales director-east, Mary O'Brien, formerly vice president of marketing, has assumed the newly created position of vice president of international, and industry veteran Mark Bossardet joins Saucony inth e newly created position of vice president ofglobal sports marketing.
Aaron Hersh, a longtime Inside Triathlon contributing editor, triathlete and bike technology expert, has been hired by Competitor Group to be a senior editor at Triathlete magazine. Hersh will oversee all bicycle and gear-related editorial including columns, tech guides and product reviews.
