NYC Triathlon Wins Injunction in Trademark Case

A district court in Manhattan ruled Tuesday in favor of the New York City Triathlon, which was seeking an injunction against the NYC Triathlon Club, arguing that the club's name infringed on state and federal trademark laws.
"We have spent 10 years and thousands of hours making the New York City Triathlon a successful brand," said John Korff, the owner of the race. "When you have created a race of this size, you need to be ready to defend it."  More 
 
Houston Marathon's Run for a Reason Program Generates $1.8M

The Houston Marathon Committee's Run for a Reason charity program raised a race record $1.8 million to benefit 46 nonprofit organizations, race organizers announced this week. During its 15-year-history, Run for a Reason has generated more than $10.4 million for charitable causes. The previous record was $1.26 million set in 2008. More
 
Los Angeles Pays $7M to Injured LA Triathlon Volunteer

The city of Los Angeles paid $7 million to settle a lawsuit brought by a volunteer for the Los Angeles Triathlon, who was left a paraplegic by an accident during the event in 2007, his attorney said Monday. Steve Albala, who was 60 at the time of the accident, was on his motorcycle helping to officiate the bicycle portion of the triathlon. A traffic officer motioned for a vehicle to enter an intersection into the volunteer's path, causing the accident, Albala's attorney contended in the lawsuit.  More

Coca Cola Signs Sponsorship Deal with Los Angeles Marathon
 
The Coca Cola Company has agreed to be a major sponsor of the March 21 Honda LA Marathon presented by K-Swiss. As a part of its first-time sponsorship, Coca Cola will provide Dasani water and Powerade sports drink for runners as well as its other beverages at marathon weekend activities. More
Pepsi Steps Up to Sponsor Tour of Battenkill

The United States was close to losing the UCI-sanctioned Tour of Battenkill when its former sponsor pulled its funding two months ago, but organizer Dieter Drake has found a replacement in PepsiCo that will allow the event to continue as scheduled in Cambridge, NY on April 18. More
 
IronKids Triathlon Series Grows to 12 Races in 2010

The 2010 IronKids National Triathlon Series schedule will grow to 12 races for its second year. The 2010 series for youth ages 6-15 will kickoff May 15 in Orlando at Walt Disney World's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campgrounds.  The series will conclude at the IronKids National Championship on October 3 in St. Petersburg. CAF Announces Dates for Major Fundraising Events

The Challenged Athletes Foundation which helps challenged athletes get involved and stay involved in sports, has announced the dates for two of its 2010 fundraising events: CAF Million Dollar Challenge, presented by Qualcomm - a seven-day, 620-mile fully supported cycling adventure down the California Coastline from October 16-22 and the 17th Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge - a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run distance triathlon and festival in La Jolla, CA on October 24. Both events are expected to raise more than $1 million each for CAF. More
 
Granny Gear Cancels Two 24 Hour Bike Races for 2010

The 24 Hours of Big Bear, scheduled to be the US National 24-hour championships in Hazelton, WV on June 12-13, has been canceled for 2010. In addition, the organizer, Granny Gear Productions, also canceled its 24 Hours of Nine Mile event in Wisconsin on July 31-August 1. More
 
Crim Foundation, MSU Team Up on Youth Fitness Project

The Crim Fitness Foundation and Michigan State University are collaborating to promote fitness and good nutrition in the lives of Flint students. Crim officials said researchers from MSU's Departments of Kinesiology and Radiology will be working with four elementary schools in Flint to collect information regarding health behaviors, academic performance, and psychosocial characteristics. The research will then be used to bring more CrimFit Youth programming into Flint Community Schools. More
 
Dorel's Cycling Sports Group Posts 25% Gain in 4Q

San Jose to Host Cycling Week in Conjunction with Amgen Tour

San Jose will host the San Jose Cycling Classic, May 15-20, in conjuction with the upcoming Amgen Tour of California. The multi-pronged event will encompass professional, amateur and community cycling activities, including a first-ever ViaVelo, a recreational ride, a non-competitive timed ride, CEO Challenge, cycling instruction and a cycling film night. The week of amateur and professional cycling events is expected to attract more than 5,000 cycling athletes, 20,000 spectators, participants and cycling-related exhibitors. More

Monument Avenue 10K Draws Record 37,200+ Runners
 
The Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k presented by Powerade closed registration last night with more than 37,200 participants, the largest in the Richmond, VA event's 11-year history. The previous event record was 32,745 set last year.  The 2010 race will be held on March 27.

Construction May Stop 2010 Siouxland Marathon

Highway construction may force the cancellation of the 2010 Siouxland Lewis & Clark Marathon, race director Steve Uhl said Wednesday. The Iowa Department of Transportation is reworking sections of Interstate 29 that will will break access to the Missouri River trail that forms four miles of the race. More

Tom Nelson, Ecco USA's President and CEO, will retire effective June 1.
Current COO Dave Quel will assume the role of acting president. Quel was promoted to become the footwear company's first COO in August 2009. Nelson will continue to serve on the USA and Canada Ecco board of directors.
