Houston Selected to Host M/W 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials

Houston will host the men's and women's 2012 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, the first time a city has staged both races, a USA Track and Field official announced Monday. The Houston Marathon Committee outbid the prestigious Boston and New York marathons, which were the sites of the 2008 women's and men's trials, respectively. The organization's board voted unanimously to award both races to Houston, said USATF chairman Doug Logan at a news conference at City Hall. The races will be held on January 14, 2012. More
WTC, Duke to Launch Triathlon Magazine This Summer

World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), owners of the portfolio that includes Ironman, Ironman 70.3, Iron Girl and IronKids brands, announced this week its partnership with John Duke for the launch of a new magazine, LAVA. With plans to appear in late summer, the magazine will feature content for the serious and committed triathlete. Initial subscribers will be participants of domestic events within the 2010 Ironman and 70.3 Series. Digital subscriptions are planned for international participants. More
DC Moves Closer to Getting 2012 Giro d'Italia Opening Stage

The Giro d'Italia, one of cycling's three grand tours, is on schedule to begin in the District of Columbia in 2012, marking the first time one of the sport's most prominent races would conduct a stage outside Europe.
Officials with the race held a gala last Thursday night at the Italian Embassy in northwest Washington to introduce the race, and although they stopped short of making an official announcement, a deal seemed all but imminent. More

Adidas Reports Drop in 4Q Net Profit

Adidas AG reported a sharper-than-expected 65% fall in quarterly net profit Wednesday and issued a downbeat forecast for 2010. The world's second-largest sportswear maker by sales said fourth-quarter net profit dropped to €19 million ($25.9 million) from €54 million a year earlier. Sales dropped 4.5% to €2.46 billion, but on a currency-neutral basis sales were stable compared with a year earlier. More
Myrtle Beach Marathon Offers Discounts to Snowed Out Runners

Runners who signed in for the Myrtle Beach Marathon last month - which was canceled because of snow - are being offered 50 percent off next year's registration fees plus half off registration fees for the Marine Corps Historic Half, a Virginia half-marathon planned for May. Marathon organizers sent e-mails offering the discounts Tuesday morning to the nearly 5,900 people who showed up for marathon weekend and picked up their race numbers. More
Canadian Town Approves Centurion Canada Cycling Event

The Blue Mountains, Ontario, council showed their support for a delegation hoping to use local roads for a massive cycling event in September by endorsing the application including a $30,000 commitment. Dan Mainguy, race director of Centurion Canada presented his plan for a "gran fondo," which is similar to a marathon but for cyclists. The event, scheduled for September 17-19 will be two days of rides with a 25-mile ride, a 50-mile ride and a 100-mile ride. The Blue Mountains event will be part of four Centurion cycling events, with the others taking place in California, Wisconsin and Colorado. More
Subaru Western Triathlon Series Announces 2010 Dates

Canada's five-race Subaru Western Triathlon Series' 2010 dates were announced yesterday at a press conference in Victoria, BC. The series starts with the Shawnigan Lake International on May 30, and will followed by the Victoria New Balance Half Iron at Elk Lake on June 20, the Rogers Sportsnet-broadcast Vancouver International Triathlon on July 4 along Spanish Bank, the Sooke International on August 8 and the first-time Banff International race Sept. 11. Brooks Sports, Inc. announced this week that throughout 2009, its "Brooks For Her" campaign collected close to $27,000 for donation to three distinct charities that focus on breast cancer research, awareness, and support. NorCal HS Mountain Bike Series Celebrates 10th Season

The Northern California High School Mountain Bike Racing Series is celebrating its 10th season this year with a five-race season for more than 500 high school mountain bikers from 40 schools across northern California. New executive director Vanessa Hauswald is as excited as anybody. Biltmore Estate to Stop Hosting Asheville Races

The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC has decided to not host the Biltmore/Kiwanis 5K/15K Classic after this year's May 16 races. The races use the roads on the estate grounds, including passing in front of the Biltmore House. The race has seen sold-out fields of about 900 runners each year abd raises more than $100,000 for the nonprofit. More
US 100 Mile Mountain Bike Series Sets 2010 Race Schedule

The US National Ultra Endurance (NUE) series of 100-mile mountain bike races has announced its 2010 series of eight races, including a first-time stop in Oregon. The series starts on April 24 with the Cohutta 100 in Tennessee and wraps up at the Shenandoah Mountain 100 in Virginia on September 5. The Oregon race, the High Cascades 100 on August 7, replaces the Sierra-Tahoe 100 race in the series. More
