Toronto Marathons Reach Spring/Fall Compromise

Toronto's competing marathons have reached a compromise that will see one stay in the fall and the other move to the spring. The agreement neutralizes city hall's threat to pit the marathon organizations against each other - and outside race groups - for the right to host Toronto's only marathon. The GoodLife Fitness Toronto Marathon will move to May, beginning in 2011. The Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon will remain in the fall. More 
 
Asics Debuts 'Sound Mind, Sound Body' Ad Campaign

Asics is rolling out a global campaign from the Vitro Agency, San Diego, that advertises the sneaker brand with the tagline, "Sound mind, sound body." That positioning is a play on the brand name "Asics," an acronym for the Latin phrase "Anima sana in corpore sano" -- "A sound mind in a sound body." A 30-second commercial breaking nationally this week demonstrates "The cleansing power of sport" -- the campaign's pervading theme -- by showing a runner sprinting through walls of water as words such as "fear," "stress" and "doubt," rendered in various languages, fall away from his body. USA Pro Criterium Championship Moves to New Site

The 2010 USA Cycling Professional Criterium National Championship will be held in the northern Chicago suburb of Glencoe, Ill. on August 14, the national governing body announced last week. The event, which attracts many of the nation's top professionals, has historically been held in Downers Grove, Ill. but will move to a new location for the first time in the event's 24-year history.The championship will be sponsored by AT&T. More

Parks Canada Approves Banff International Triathlon

The Subaru Banff International Triathlon has received approval from Parks Canada to be held on September 11. The triathlon was initially rejected by Parks Canada due to concerns over the race swim site and the proposed race date, which was scheduled to take place on a date that is typically already busy in the National Park. On the advice of Parks Canada a revised proposal was submitted with a new date and less environmentally sensitive swimming venue, which proved instrumental in receiving the approval. More

H3 Publications Shelves Tri Magazine Plans

H3 Publications has decided to not publish Tri magazine as its intended to originally do in May. "I pulled the plug," said Dave House, owner of H3 Publications. "It just got way too political." Tri was to roll out with four issues this year. H3 was going to deliver 30,000 copies to newstands and 30,000 as giveaways at events and such.
 
MB Marathon Planning to Make Response on Cancellation Issues

Myrtle Beach Marathon organizers have promised participants will receive an announcement early next week -- likely Monday, but Tuesday at the latest -- about how the organizers plan to try to make it up to them after weather forced the race's cancellation this year. Shaun Walsh, the marathon's president and race co-director, said the group is planning special offers for next year's race and is working with another race that will also offer this year's disappointed runners a discount. USAT Selects Tucson for National Duathlon Festival

USA Triathlon announced Wednesday that Tucson, AZ will host the National Duathlon Festival in 2011 and 2012. Fitness Business Bright Spot in Garmin 4Q Sales

Garmin Ltd.'s outdoor/fitness segment generated 4th quarter sales of $149 million, up 24% from the year earlier quarter in a period when Garmin's overall revenues rose just 1%. For the year, outdoor/fitness sales rose 10% to $469 million. By comparison automotive/mobile sales fell 19%, aviation fell 24% and the marine segment fell 13%. More
 
Fleet Feet Chicago to Expand in New Lincoln Square Location

Fleet Feet Sports is relocating its Lincoln Square store in Chicago into a space more than three times as big as its existing location in the neighborhood. Franchise owner Dave Zimmer will move his store, currently 2,200 square feet at 4555 N. Lincoln Ave., just a couple blocks north to 4762 N. Lincoln Ave. The new location, slated to open June 1, is a three-level, 7,500-square-foot space that's to include an indoor track and multi-purpose room offering running seminars. More
