Triathlete Magazine's Duke to Leave Competitor Group
Bicycle Retailer
John Duke, senior vice-president of print media at Competitor Group, will leave the company. After two years at CGI, and 14 successful years as publisher of Triathlete magazine, Duke has decided to pursue other opportunities that will be announced at a later date. Duke began his career at Triathlete in 1997 as publisher. Prior to Triathlete, he worked as a sports marketing consultant with Reebok and remains a partner with Multisports.com. Also, CGI has announced expanded responsibilities for Andrew Hersam, executive vice-president of media. Hersam will assume direct oversight of print, digital and sponsorship sales for all of CGI's media and event properties. More
 
USATF Foundation Approves 2010 Grant Funding Amount

The USA Track & Field Foundation approved $385,000 for grant funding in 2010 at its winter board meeting in San Diego, USATF Foundation Executive Director Tom Jackovic and Chairman Bob Greifeld announced Tuesday. The total includes money available for youth grants, elite grants and special programs such as The Distance Project. More
 
Philadelphia Insurance Renews Ironman Sponsorship

Philadelphia Insurance Companies(PHLY) announced the renewal of its two-year sponsorship agreement with Ironman as a sponsor and the official commercial insurer of thirteen Ironman events in the United States for 2010 and 2011. In renewing their sponsorship, Philadelphia Insurance Companies will continue sending members of TEAMPHLY to race in Ironman events in addition to receiving promotional opportunities through 2011. More

Phoenix City Council Renews Deal with Competitor Group

Phoenix leaders on Tuesday renewed an agreement with the organizer of the P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon and 1/2 Marathon, ensuring the race will pass through the city through 2013. The council voted 5-2 to extend the contract with Competitor Group Inc., which has managed the race since 2004. More

Fifth Third River Bank Run Boosts Winners' Prize Money

Fifth Third River Bank Run officials today announced their May 8 USA Track & Field 25-kilometer championship race will pay its first-place male and female finishers $7,000 each -- an increase of $3,000. The substantial raise in first-place prize money for the 33rd River Bank Run is largely the result of enticing more top-flight Americans to compete in the nation's top 25K event. "Our original prize money was not keeping pace with other U.S. championship races, so we felt we needed to do something," said Greg Meyer, the event's recruiter of elite runners and the last American to win the Boston Marathon. Big Sur Marathon Sells Out 2010 Entries

The Big Sur International Marathon has sold out its entries for the April 2010 marathon event, with additional distance events nearing capacity as well. "This is the earliest we've sold out in the past several years," stated race director Wally Kastner, attributing the rise in early interest to two recent accolades published in Runner's World magazine. More
 
New DC Area Race to Cross Woodrow Wilson Bridge
 
Endurance Enterprises LLC and Pacer's Events have announced the creation of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon to held for the first time on September 19. The race will start at George Washington's Virginia home, Mount Vernon, follow the George Washington Parkway to Old Town Alexandria, cross the Potomac River on the Wilson Bridge to the finish at National Harbor in Maryland. It will be the first race to cross the Wilson Bridge.  It will be limited to 4000 runners. More

Surf City USA Marathon, Half Marathon Sell Out

Race organizers announced Monday that all "traditional" entry slots into the Surf City USA Marathon and Half Marathon are sold out.  The half marathon filled up on Christmas Eve while the marathon reached capacity earlier in December; both are by far the earliest-ever sell-outs for these 14th annual events.  A record 19,000 runners are now signed up for the February 7 race. More
 
Muncie Multisport Series to Expand in 2010

Muncie, IN's Prairie Creek Reservoir, already the site of the long-running Muncie Endurathon, will now host five additional multi-sport athletic events for 2010. The series, which includes both duathlons and triathlons from May through October, was announced publicly Monday at a Delaware County commissioners meeting by local endurance athlete Steve Tomboni. Tomboni and his wife Tammy, both endurance athletes, will administer the races through Muncie Multi-Sport Inc., a business they formed at the end of last year. More 
 
Derby Festival Changes Course, Increases Entry Limit to 15K.

Kentucky Derby Festival officials have changed this year's marathon and mini-marathon by altering the course and boosting the entry limit for the two races from 12,000 to 15,000. The marathon's course has been changed so it no longer crosses over itself, which organizers say will clear up congestion. More
 
Tour de Cookie Launched to Help Tucson Children Programs

Tucson's Blue Pants Racing has created a new event for cyclists to help their community in a sweet way. The Tour de Cookie noncompetitive bicycle ride on January 10 is is designed for all ages and ability levels, offering two options - a 10-mile and a 31-mile course - between 10 cookie stands that feature bake sales operated by local nonprofit groups and businesses. Proceeds from the bake sales benefit local adaptive programs and athletic programs for children with disabilities through the city's Edith Ball Adaptive Recreation Center. More

Mike Reilly, the vice president of major event sales at the Active Network and the "Voice of Ironman," is kicking off the year with master of ceremonies duties at three of the endurance industry's biggest events.  Reilly will again MC the Competitor Magazine's Endurance Sports Awards (January 30, San Diego) and the Running USA Conference (January 31-February 2, Carlsbad, CA).  For the first time, he will be the MC at USA Triathlon's Race Director Symposium (February 12-14, Colorado Springs, CO).
