RRW Report Shows Running Race Participation Growth in 2009

Participation in American road races grew by a healthy 11% in 2009, according to an analysis prepared by Race Results Weekly.  The analysis, which looked at the results of 200 well-established road races in 38 states and the District of Columbia, found that 168 of the races, or 84%, showed growth in the number of official finishers compared to 2008. A total of 1,365,981 finishers were recorded by the group of events analyzed, up 133,706 from 2008. More
 
Inside-Out Sports to Title Sponsor NC Triathlon Series 
 
Inside-Out Sports, a North Carolina triathlon retail store with locations in Cary and Charlotte, announced today that it has agreed to be the title sponsor of the North Carolina Triathlon Series.  The five-year deal with series organizer Set Up Events renames the 25 event series as the Inside-Out Sports Triathlon Series. MetroPCS to Renew Dallas White Rock Marathon Sponsorship

MetroPCS will continue to be the Dallas White Rock Marathon title sponsor, company officials confirmed. Terms have not been finalized, said Lisa Campbell, Director of Advertising and PR for MetroPCS Texas and Louisiana. She said MetroPCS enjoyed being the 2009 title sponsor and partnering with race beneficiary Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. She anticipates signing a contract in the next few weeks. More
 
San Diego Triathlon Debut Delayed to 2011

Last month IMG Worldwide announced the launch of a new San Diego Triathlon set to take place in March 2010, in Mission Bay.  This month those plans have changed with IMG announcing that the event will be re-scheduled to March 2011. "As much as we never plan to pull back and re-schedule an event, the economic conditions and realistic timeline for an impactful launch in 2010, have prompted us to re-evaluate our options," said James Leitz, senior vice president of IMG. Mizuno Extends ING Georgia Marathon Sponsorship
 
Mizuno is continuing its support of running and the running community by signing an extension with the ING Georgia Marathon and Half Marathon to remain as the Official Footwear and Apparel Supplier for the March 21 race.  The ING Georgia Marathon has served as one of Mizuno's integral running sponsorships over the last three years, since the race debuted in March 2007.

Runner's World Adds New Smart Coach Feature by Peaksware 
 
Runner's World magazine has announced the launch of a new premium interactive feature of Runner's World's Smart Coach, which allows runners to load customized training plans into an online training log. RW's Smart Coach enables runners everywhere to design a customized training plan and load it into an interactive personal trainer account, where they can log actual workouts against the plan, upload training data, record nutrition, and create routes. Peaksware, the software company who also powers the Runner's World Personal Trainer, designed the new interactive Smart Coach feature. More

Heikka Takala, an executive with Proctor & Gamble, has been named to replace Roger Talermo as the president and chief executive officer of Amer Sports effective April 1.  Amer Sports is the parent company of a collection of sporting goods brands including Suunto, Mavic and Atomic.
 
Percy Sutton, the Manhattan borough president who supported New York Road Runners' president Fred Lebow idea of running the New York City Marathon through all five boroughs, died on December 26.  He was 89.  Sutton's political support of the marathon played a crucial role in getting city approval for the city-wide course. 
 
Frank Rudy, the inventor of the Air Sole technology used by Nike, died on December 13 at his California home.  He was 84.  He brought his idea to Nike in 1977.  The technology was first used in Nike running shoes in 1979 and then was expanded to basketball and tennis shoes in 1982. 
 
Art Castellano, the race director of the New Jersey Marathon, was honored by the Long Branch Concordance, a New Jersey social service organization, with its annual Community Service Award.  The New Jersey Marathon benefits local charities.

Pacific Sports LLC is a premier sports consultation firm, dedicated to the management of top-notch multi-sport events all around the nation including triathlons, marathons, and cycling events.   The appropriate individual has a minimum of 2-3 years in event management and experienced with the management of client, sponsor, and permitting agencies.  Pacific Sports is looking for someone who can immediately spearhead the management and development of event operations plans while also identifying new business and working closely with major sponsors.  This is a full-time position reporting to the President. Key Responsibilities: Direct and manage all aspects of race production for annual events; Secure all necessary permits with municipalities and event venues; Recruit and manage contractors, crew, and volunteers for all events; Create and execute event production schedules; Financial management - budgeting and invoicing; Contract drafting and negotiation; Coordinate event planning meetings with key internal groups; Oversee sponsorship activation and assist in sponsorship acquisition; Assist in the creation and management of the annual marketing plan.  Focus on direct, online, and grassroots marketing strategies; Identify and cultivate new business opportunities.
