New Balance to Pay for Charles River Paths Snow Removal

New Balance has announced a sponsorship agreement with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) that will ensure area runners, joggers and walkers have clear running paths along the Charles River during the 2009-2010 winter season. Under the agreement, New Balance, which is based in Boston, has pledged to provide funding to support snow removal efforts along the 17-plus mile Charles River path spanning from the Museum of Science area in Cambridge to the Galen Street Bridge in Watertown. More 
 
USA Triathlon Creates New Logo for 2010

Triathlon Australia Cancels 2010 Challenge Series

Triathlon Australia has cancelled the national Challenge Series, saying the events were not financially viable. The entire series will be scrapped with events in Geelong, Hobart, Sydney and Adelaide to fall by the wayside as others such as the Canberra leg will be renamed and run by the state body. New Triathlon Australia president Peter Hedge said it was the only responsible course of action that could be taken. "It was clear from the review that the Challenge Series had failed to meet the organisation's expectations and deliver on its original objectives," Hedge said in a statement. More

Down Economy Fails to Slow Austin Race Interest

It has been a busy year in the Austin-area running world, where more than 120 races were run and many of those were run at or near capacity. While some people have answered the challenges of the economy by reducing activities and spending, it doesn't appear as though running has been a part of that strategy. "In 2009, we sold out for the first time ever," says Austin Marathon race director John Conley. "The long-term trend shows that more people are running, more people are paying attention to fitness, and more people are entering races. I really do think it's recession-proof." More

SheROX Triathlon Series to Expand in 2010

The SheROX Triathlon Series, the all-women's sprint distance triathlon series, returns in 2010 with an expanded schedule. The 2010 SheROX Series will include stops in Philadelphia, Miami, Tempe, AZ, Rock Hill, SC, and Boulder, CO with additional cities to be announced in coming weeks. The 2010 series expects to include at least seven cities. St. George Officials Look for Ironman Race to Boost Local Economy

St. George area businesses have already begun preparations for a May Ironman Triathlon that officials say could generate up to $10 million for the local economy. Some 2,500 participants have registered for the event. More than 5,000 hotel room nights have already been reserved. Organizers anticipate the event will draw an estimated 10,000 visitors and 30,000 spectators. The St. George Convention and Tourism office spent $100,000 for a rights fee to host the event. The funds were drawn from tourism taxes and the state sports commission.
 
WBZ-TV Renews Local Boston Marathon Broadcasting Rights

WBZ-TV (Channel 4) will continue to be the official broadcasting home of the Boston Marathon. The station has announced that it renewed its partnership with the Boston Athletic Assocation through 2012. WBZ has had the exclusive local, live broadcasting rights for the marathon for 27 years. More

Jim Curl, Valerie Silk, Carl Thomas, Barb Lindquist, and Paula Newby-Fraser have been selected for induction into the USA Triathlon Hall of Fame.  The induction ceremony will be held on February 13 in Colorado Springs, CO. Curl, along with Thomas, began the U.S. Triathlon Series in 1982 and produced over 150 triathlons internationally. Silk served as the owner, president, CEO and race director for the Hawaiian Triathlon Corporation (now the World Triathlon Corporation) throughout the 1980s. Thomas also founded CAT Sports, Inc. in 1984, creating network televised special events for a number of sports and acting as the executive producer of over 25 televised triathlon events for ESPN, NBC and other national syndications.  Lindquist was a member of the USA Triathlon World Championship team for 10 years, and in 134 career races, she won 33, stood on the podium 86 times and finished in the top 10 114 times. She placed ninth in the 2004 Olympic Games.  Newby-Fraser is considered one of the greatest triathletes to ever have competed. She won eight Ironman World Championships between 1986 and 1996 and has 24 total Ironman career wins. More

Create a strands marketing experience at a minimum of 12 sporting events each year.
Organize and outline the details of monthly marketing event to be determined by marketing directors in order to promote the Strands brand, promote the website www.strands.com, and recruit new users and partners to the site.
Promote Strands to all possible users and business partners at the event and follow-up as needed.
Work with business development unit to identify and create focus of marketing on all fronts to build the usership and revenue generating ability of www.strands.com.
Contract well known local athletes to represent Strands.com at events to help promote Strands.
Work with the marketing team to ensure cohesive initiatives at all events that build a strong public view of Strands and create business opportunities.
