Marine Corps Marathon Race Date to Change in 2010, 2011

The Marine Corps Marathon, traditionally held on the last Sunday in Octover, will move its 2010 and 2011 race dates to the first Sunday in November in order to continue using the Washington Convention Center for its pre-race expo.  The MCM held its expo in the convention center for the first time this year. More 
 
TV, Organizational Costs Work Against DC Slot on ITU Tour

High host broadcast and organizational costs worked against placing a race in Washington, DC on the 2010 International Triathlon Union's Dextro Energy World Championships Series.  "We all thought Washington DC was a wonderful venue and it was a very well-done, fantastic spectacle for the sport," said Paul Coleman, managing director of the Dextro Energy Triathlon - ITU World Championship Series. "We loved it and both the ITU and the organizers in Washington are both keen to be part of the series going forward after 2010. The immediate problem is that Washington D.C. is a very expensive city in which to organize and to put on an event." More 
 
Fort Worth Considers Charging Events a Per-Block Street Fee

Nonprofit groups, including the Cowtown Marathon and other fundraisers, might have to pay thousands of dollars more to hold their events on city streets, depending on discussions about a new street-use ordinance. The event organizers are worried that they might have to move or charge higher fees if the rules are enacted. The proposed fee is $75 per block per day, which could amount to tens of thousands of dollars for the Cowtown and other festivals. More 
 
Under Armour Reports Boost in 3Q Earnings

Under Armour Inc. raised its 2009 outlook Tuesday after reporting third-quarter earnings rose slightly on higher sales of its sports apparel and shoes. But the company plans next year to tap the brakes on its footwear growth - a category executives expect to one day generate more sales than its moisture-wicking T-shirts and other apparel.The Baltimore sportswear company posted a third-quarter profit of $26.2 million, or 52 cents per share. That's up from $25.7 million, or 51 cents per share, a year earlier. More 
 
Competitor Group Renews Interest in Las Vegas Marathon

In the 10-plus months since Competitor Group took over the Las Vegas Marathon and changed the race name to the Rock 'n' Roll Las Vegas Marathon, runner interest in the event has returned. Nearly six weeks before the December 6 race, it's clear the event will draw record numbers. Race general manager Adam Zocks said registration topped the 20,000 mark last week and he expects that number to top 25,000 by race day. More

Georgia Ironman 70.3 Provides $4.7M Economic Boost

September's ESi Ironman 70.3 in Augusta, GA generated for $4.7 million for the local economy, the Greater Augusta Sports Council said last week. That figure is more than double the impact predicted in earlier estimates. The half-Ironman will also return to Augusta for at least two more years. More
 
Triathlon Proposed for Canada's Banff National Park
The Banff Crag & Canyon 
A proposal to host a triathlon in Banff spurred a two-hour discussion on appropriate uses of a national park. LifeSport Coaching and Events, which organizes several triathlons in British Columbia, is applying to host one on August 21, 2010 in the park. LifeSport Coaching and Events director Paul Regensburg presented to Parks Canada's Special Events Public Advisory Committee (SEPAC) on October 22, saying they would cap the event at 1,500 participants, but estimated the first year would draw around 500 to 750 participants. More
 
SW Indiana to Host New Marathon Next April

A group of runners in the Evansville area have announced the creation of the Southern Indiana Classic Marathon to be held on April 11.  Race director Jill Gehlhausen said the event would also include a half marathon. More 
 
Rochester Considers Hosting Endurance Events

The city of Rochester might play host to a new half marathon next spring, as well as a triathlon/duathlon. Mayor Robert Duffy is asking City Council to approve a $40,000 contract with YellowJacket Racing LLC to produce the Flower City Challenge on April 24-25. The duathlon will be a 5K run, followed by a 20-mile bike race and a second 5K run. For the triathlon, the final segment is a canoe event. The half marathon will be based at Blue Cross Arena at the Community War Memorial, and route through city neighborhoods, along the river and canal. More

Jeff Weiss has been promoted by Dorel Industries's Cycling Sports Group to the new position of vice president of international business development.  Working with Cannondale, Schwinn, GT, Mongoose, and SUGOI, Weiss will target the international market to improve the competitive position of each brand and the CSG organization as a whole. More specifically, he will lead CSG UK and CSG Australia in order to grow the dealer network in these influential countries. 
 
Beaver Theodosakis, the co-founder of prAna, has reassumed the position of CEO, with the departure of Michael Crooke from that position.  Scott Kerslake, the founder of Athleta who was brought in by Crooke, will  become president of prAna and divide company responsibilities with Theodosakis. A search for a new CEO is expected to begin next year.
 
Sara Massengill has joined the ZOOMA Women's Race Series as its associate director of events. Massengill previously had been the manager of the St. Joe Heroes charity athlete program with the St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis.
 
Dave McGillivray, the president of DMSE, Inc. the race director of the Boston Marathon and a long time supporter of the Jimmy Fund and Dana Farber Cancer Institute has won the prestigious 2009 Jimmy Award. The Jimmy Award was established to honor those who have, over the years, committed themselves to the mission of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. McGillivray has raised money for and awareness of the Jimmy Fund for more than 30 years through money long distance runs and events.
 
Dr. Stuart Weiss has been named by the New York Road Runners as the medical director of the ING New York City Marathon. 
 
Terry McGinnis, executive director of the Tour of Utah cycling event, has died after a prolonged battle with cancer. McGinnis was 46.  A pro cyclist for more than 20 years, McGinnis was with the Tour of Utah for four years in different capacities. In 2006 he was a radio commentator, in 2007 he served as a consultant to tour chairman Greg Miller, and in 2008-09 he held the executive director position.
 
Alex Zanardi, the two-time CART champron race car driver who lost his legs in a 2001 race crash, won the handcrank wheelchair race at the recent Venice Marathon.
