White Rock Marathon Signs MetroPCS as Title Sponsor

Dallas' December 13 marathon will now be called the MetroPCS Dallas White Rock Marathon presented by NexBank. Marathon officials signed a multi-year title sponsorship agreement with wireless company MetroPCS Communications, Inc. Terms were not released. "A title sponsor like MetroPCS provides more recognition for the event," said marathon race director Marcus Grunewald. "With MetroPCS's far-reaching markets, we will gain exposure in places we might not otherwise touch." More

MC Historic Half Boosts Fredericksburg Economy

The Fredericksburg, VA area received $2.1 million in spending over the Marine Corps Historic Half marathon weekend during May 2009 according to a report from Mary Washington University. The study, which randomly interviewed runners and spectators - both local and visitors, found that more than 14,500 people came to the area as a part of the Historic Half generating an estimated economic impact (the total impact of spending using the multiplier effect) of between $4.4 and $6.5 million. More

Canadian Race Using Qualifying Times to Boost Interest

The 10K run at the Guelph Thanksgiving Day Races will be using age-graded qualifying times for the first time when filling out this year's field, making the day's longest race more competitive.
While there will be five races on October 12 open to recreational runners and families, men and women entering the 10K will have to prove their qualifying times in either a previous five-kilometre or 10-km race. Race director John Marsden said the changes were made in an attempt to shift the recreational runners' focus into becoming faster and also to resurrect the 10K race, which wasn't offered last year due to a lack of interest. USAF Chief to Attend USAF Marathon for First Time

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz is scheduled to attend this weekend's U.S. Air Force Marathon at Dayton, OH's Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. General Schwartz's attendance marks the first time the service's most senior officer will attend the event, which is in its 13th year. The general, an avid runner, is scheduled to present trophies to the respective male and female top finishers of the full and half-marathon, wheelchair and 10K races. The USAF Marathon expects a record field of close to 10,000 runners for its races. More

South Dakota's Monumental Marathon Cancelled

The Monumental Challenge Marathon in South Dakota's Black Hills, scheduled for October 3, has been cancelled.  The 189 registered runners were notified by e-mail last Saturday. The organizer, All Sport Central of Sioux Falls, indicated last week it was having trouble getting the needed permits. The company said it will refund the entry fee, minus the $5 processing charge.
