Joyful Mayhem, Victory, Revelry

I loved seeing the headlines after the Giant's won the World Series:  Joyful Mayhem, Revelry, Ecstasy, Victory.  And I liked this description: "2010 San Francisco Giants were a breath of fresh air: engaging, free-spirited, a bit on the wild side and, dare we say, interesting."

Sounds a lot like a description of the students and instructors at Bernal Yoga.  Throughout the years I have been inspired by how interesting the lives are of so many people in the Bernal Yoga community.  Free spirited- check!, Enganging- definitely!, a breath of fresh air and a bit of the wild side- check and check!  All the creative energy, the intellectual bandwidth, the compassionate hearts the caring souls, so much goodness.

In this month of giving Thanks and tapping the syrupy sweet heart of gratitude, we are pleased to offer some unique opportunities for you to declare your own personal victories, joyful mayhem, unbridled revelry, transformational healing--all of this-- both on and off the mat.  Please read on for the details.

With Gratitude-

Savonn, Bill and everyone at Bernal Yoga

Bhavani MakiIf Yoga is the dissolving of all self-limiting thoughts patterns and tendencies, then self awareness and getting free is the key! The Yoga Sutras are designed to provide a map for the Yogi's journey through the trials and travails of the yogic process. As it is said, it is easy to start something and it is easy to end something, but it is in the maintenance and perseverance that the true work and rewards of yoga are found!

Bhavani's gift is to peel away the outer shell of the sutras and to reveal the nectar of the teachings in a way that is meaningful to our times. Join her in an uplifting and often humorous exploration of yoga and the insights the sutras provide into revealing the keys to success and a healthy and sustainable approach to the process of yoga.

Traditionally, the Yoga Sutras are an integral part of practice, but in the West have remained largely untouched. It is as if we are trying to practice Yoga with our hands tied behind our backs.  In this next session of Sutra discussion, we will look at the challenges we are sure to face, the art of navigating successfully and to ultimately maintain the right attitude so we can enjoy the process wholeheartedly, free ourselves up, and in the fire of practice not get burned.

Slow Flow with Sound Healing
led class by Megan Windeler accompanied with music by Amber Field
Sunday, December 5th (1:30-3:30pm)

Megan WindelerSlow your roll and open your heart with sweet movement and music by Amber Field.

In this workshop we will explore being present with the flow of movement from asana to asana, going slow and mindful enough to honor the transitions between movements as shapes in and of themselves.

We will hold shapes long enough to find their inner flow and the rhythm of our own breath. Amber's original and heartfelt music creates an atmosphere of energy and support for going deep into each shape. The intuitive and organic flow of her sounds reminds us not to stop and wait for the next shape but to explore the limitless potential of each breath, shape and movement, opening us up to the healing and transforming power of Yoga. This workshop is open to all levels.

Beginners as well as Pregnant and New Mamas welcomed and encouraged to attend.

Lessons in Courage
As was mentioned at the start of this newsletter, Bernal Yoga has always had a community  rich in character, creativeness, innovation and service.  Here's to the full cycle, the ebb and flow, the beginnings and endings.

1. Remembering Judy Garlow

One of our most loved students, Judy Garlow, passed away a few years ago.

I remember having her in a class when I was teaching a meditation technique that involved saying "So/Hum" on inhale/exhale.

Judy Garlow Tribute
"The yogic man tra "so hum" is not only a reflection of the sound of the breath but also carries a contemplative meaning: "I am that" (so = "I am" and hum = "that")."

Judy later quipped that she thought I was suggesting we all say "So What?" as we inhaled/exhaled.  Upon finding out what I had really been asking, she decided "So What?" was more contemplative and better suited to quieting the mind.

Bill recently posted, to the Bernal Yoga blog, a tribute to not only Judy, but also an honorable "shout out" to our Mom and others who kept/keep coming to the mat regardless of the challenges, hardships and struggles they may face.  READ the Blog Post

2. Beginnings: Jeff Cross

New students come from all walks of life, and the spark that ignites when someone catches the yoga buzz always makes me a bit giddy as I remember the initial time that I too stepped on the mat.  22 years later, my first class still replays with vividness in my mind.  I am ever thankful for the practice.

A newer student, Jeff Cross, has definitely caught the yoga fever.  You can feel his enthusiasm, adventuresome spirit and stick-with-it attitude.
