Greetings!
Teach the children. Teach them the taste of sassafras and wintergreen. The lives of the blue sailors, mallow, sunbursts, the moccasin-flowers. And the frisky ones-inkberry, lamb's quarter, blueberries. And the aromatic ones-rosemary and oregano. Stand them in the stream, head them upstream, rejoice as they learn to love this green space they live in, its sticks and leaves and then the silent, beautiful blossoms.
~Attention is the beginning of devotion~
(above excerpt from Mary Oliver's poem "Upstream" in her book Blue Iris)
I am often asked "what is yoga?" and the more that my practice envelops my life the less I know how to answer that question. My working definition of 'yoga' changes as I uncover, discover or sometimes simply rediscover some basic things like a full satisfying breath, or a pose where my whole body hums, or waking without rushing and slowing down to set intentions and acknowledge gratitude. More of less this amounts to being present and thus my expanded definition of yoga: paying attention and being present in order to clear my mind, open my senses and be true to what is.
This month there are many extra and special things happening at Sellwood Yoga. We hope you join us for a workshop, class or visit during the open house next Saturday At the bottom of this newsletter there are instructions for how to save $5 on an August workshop or apply the savings to a t-shirt or market bag.
With gratitude-
Savonn & everyone at Sellwood Yoga

Yoga for Moms and Daughters (tweens 10-14) with Rosey Wyland
Starts this Sunday- August 1st- 1:30-2:45pm
When I was a tween, in the early 80's, doing yoga with my mom involved putting on a scratchy leotard and looking at a book that was a cross between Jane Fonda and Lilias Folan. Our sessions didn't last long, and my standout memory apart from the attire and reference book was wondering how to get my Farah Fawcett inspired feathered hairdo to stay in place after going upside down.
Luckily, these days there are lots of fun ways to discover and share yoga and places other than a carpeted living room to practice.
This series is specifically designed for girls ages 10-14 and their moms to help build strength and flexibility while increasing body awareness and self-confidence.

"Summer Day of Mindfulness", "Mind Over Chatter" or "Savor Your Saturday" however you want to view it, the premise is pretty much the same- we all can do better in being present to what is now, real, and alive in and around us. She is delightful and a great person to learn from. I am honored to be working with Denise to provide an integrated version of 3-D entertainment. We can call it 3-M: movement, meditation and mindfulness. The play station is in your mind. READ MORE and/or Sign Up NowQuestions?
