It's been one year since I left Bernal Heights. It will be great to be back next week to see everyone and try out all the new exciting places that have opened on Cortland ave. (It's fun to read about Bernal Heights and see you quoted in the New York Times these days.)
It's also been almost eight years since we opened Bernal Yoga. Looking back, I'm glad for all the positive change that has happened in the neighborhood. Amidst the change, I am also thankful for the stability of the direction of Bernal Yoga. While time and people move on, standards should not.
A few months ago, we hired the first teachers in Portland. We based our experience on what we knew from Bernal Yoga. It was then that I spoke of--and it hit home to me-- that there are some of the same teachers, work-trade and students that are on the schedule
today that were on the opening schedule or have been coming for almost eight years. That says something about the collective effort that is Bernal Yoga. It's more than a yoga studio.
I believe yoga and other health and wellness studios play an important role in bringing people together the old fashioned way--physically being together. They offer us a place to not only live a healthier
lifestyle, but also somewhere to gather to form meaningful community relationships that are free from sectional political, religious or social boundaries.
Thanks for being a part of this great community. I look forward to seeing you next week.
Yours truly-
