Fireworks Gone Awry

You may have read in the local news that the Waukesha July 4th Fireworks were abruptly ended when they started a few grass fires on the airport grounds.  Before the rumors reach apocalyptic dimensions, here are the facts:  there were two grass fires, but there was no damage to any aircraft or hangars.  Firefighters were on the scene immediately to assist several airport tenants and pilots in extinguishing the flames.

The drought was, of course, a big safety consideration for the fireworks event, and the firefighters prepared for this by doing "pump drills" on the Expo Center grounds to wet the grass thoroughly and make it less flammable, while also doing a productive safety exercise. Unfortunately, the wind shifted right as the fireworks were getting underway, and rogue debris found its way onto airport property, without getting clearance from ATC or anyone else.  Next year, we're considering scheduling an  airport-wide aircraft wash or water balloon fight to wet the airport grounds and defend our turf against those pesky fireworks.

Delta Taxiway Project
The State of Wisconsin has approved a reconstruction project for the "Delta" Taxiway beginning in front of the control tower and extending to the Quad Graphics hangar.  Initially, the project was scheduled to start this month, but due to lack of federal funding, it hs been delayed to spring of 2013.  We understand that this project will impact many of you, and we will be sure to keep you informed when the project start date approaches.

WCBA Returns with Networking After 5 Event
Networking After 5_group shotThe Waukesha County Airport is hosting another "Networking After 5" event with the Waukesha County Business Alliance on August 21, 2012 from 5 - 7 p.m.

We encourage you to attend if you are a business person who would like to network with other professionals and tell them about the airport and your experience flying for recreation or business.  Of course, our charter aircraft companies, flight schools and other airport-based businesses are also highly encouraged to attend and tell the participants about your services.  Last year's event was attended by more than 100 people.

The B-17 "Aluminum Overcast" is one of several aircraft that will be here on display, just ahead of the Wings over Waukesha Air Show.  Hors d'oeuvres, beverages and B-17 ground tours will be part of the fun.  To attend, you will need to register for $15 at the WCBA website.
Commemorative Air Force Welcomes New PT-26
CAF PT26 2012

The Commemorative Air Force - Wisconsin Wing recently welcomed a beautifully restored PT-26 used by the military in WWII to train new aviators on the basics of flight operations.  The aircraft is a replacement for the former PT-26 which was lost in an accident in 2011.  It is already making appearances at air shows and fly-ins, and it will be making its first appearance at AirVenture next week.  The PT-26 will be joined there by the Wisconsin Wing's SNJ-5, which was acquired last year and is a Navy version of the T-6 advanced trainer.  This will be the first year that the Wing will have two aircraft at AirVenture.

The Commemorative Air Force is based in Midland, Texas, and operates more than 70 Wings across the United States.  To learn about the organization, visit www.commemorativeairforce.org.  To learn about joining the Wisconsin Wing, based at Waukesha County Airport, go to www.cafwi.org.

Boy Scout Aims to Beautify Airport
Mark Ninomiya_Boy ScoutMark Ninomiya, son of long time tenant Dr. Jim Ninomiya, is a Boy Scout in Troop 183 of Brookfield and he is working his way toward the rank of Eagle Scout.  The enterprising young man may be seen in the near future working to clean up debris and trash that has accumulated along the airport fence line.  He sees this project as a way to show his municipal pride, beautify the airport and protect the environment.   If you see Mark, please be sure to thank him for his hard work and commitment to our community.
Volunteers Needed for Wings Over Waukesha
The Wings over Waukesha Air Show on August 25 - 26, 2012, provides volunteers with the opportunity to be an important part of bringing an amazing air show to life for our community.  You'll develop new friendships, enjoy the cameraderie of working as a team with others from the airport community, and get an opportunity to see dozens of fabulous aircraft and meet the pilots who come in from across the country.

If that sounds like fun to you, and you're available to work a shift on Saturday, August 25, Sunday, August 26 or both, your help would be much appreciated. We're in need of volunteers to work in parking and the Kid Zone, and there are still a few openings in other areas like admissions. We could also use some help for set up and clean up on Friday, August 24 and Monday, August 27.  Volunteers get a cool, commemorative Wings over Waukesha shirt, free admission to the event, and a free meal.  You can learn more on the volunteer page of the website.

Last, but not least, we have scheduled a work day on Saturday, August 11, when we'll be building stuff like ticket booths.  If you're handy, bring a hammer, some work gloves and an appetite - lunch is provided.  Contact volunteer@wingsoverwaukesha.com to let us know you're coming and to get the details of when and where to report.
The Waukesha County Airport/Crites Field Newsletter is intended to inform airport tenants, visitors and other interested individuals about the latest events, news and services available to them at the airport.  If you would like to see a topic featured in the next newsletter, please contact Kurt Stanich in airport operations at kstanich@waukeshacounty.gov or call 262-521-5250.
