ROOTS Receives Arts Marketing Training from National Arts Strategies

On April 12-13, five ROOTS staff & board members traveled to Washington D.C. to participate in an intensive training in arts marketing.  The seminar was hosted by National Arts Strategies, a 25-year-old organizational leadership and capacity-building organization. From in-depth reading and homework assignments to group lectures to breakout/team exercises, the seminar was well-timed for ROOTS as we are head-long into developing our next strategic plan.  Reflecting on the opportunity, Carlton Turner, ROOTS Executive Director said, "More than how to tell our story, the strategic marketing seminar helped us see that first we must understand what story we want to tell and to whom. I look forward to more opportunities like this from NAS."

In a nutshell, the strategic plan has many layers but the most intense for RSC is to graduate from a body of ten plus members working when there is a call, to any and all Rooters. How can any Roots member be a Resource for Social Change? To elevate the consciousness of the members from regional affiliates working in alignment with the mission statement but perhaps independently of Roots... to creating a circular culture of inertia in how we work in our craft and communities extending Roots resources to the field beyond grants and networking; really having a hands on partnership where the intentions of our principles come back to the organization for the benefit of all, then back out in a much more assertive way. SHARED POWER!! PARTNERSHIP!!!

This is nothing new in our collective thinking I do believe, but perhaps now the intentions of the last strategic plan that essentially had the vision, will now meet the mechanical aspects of making it more real and visual to us like never before. Again, what a time and opportunity for this body to be leaders in partnership with the executive committee and all of the workgroups and ensembles to be the change we want to see.

The strategic plan is just that: a plan. It has to be brought to the regions in a manner that's as equally assertive as the intentions it has for the organization, and there are plans and structures being developed to do so almost immediately.

Because the Annual Meeting has a limited capacity, and because our organization is first and foremost dedicated to our membership, the first month of registration - mid-April to mid-May - will only be open to current ROOTS members.  After that, it's open season for all of you new folks we can't wait to meet!

Thanks to a grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation, Alternate ROOTS is seeking a dynamic and visionary Visual Arts Coordinator for the Annual Meeting to facilitate and cultivate service to its visual arts members and potential members through the Annual Meeting.  Read more here.

Cecille's Recipe Corner:
Kombucha -
 It's spring and it's growing,
let's toast to that!

Kombucha

Kombucha is a fizzy, fermented tea beverage made from a base of bacteria and yeast called SCOBY (Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast).  It is said to have originated in Asia (Russia and China) and Kombucha enthusiasts claim it's a tonic for digestion and a boost for the immune system.

I was introduced to Kombucha when I was in the San Francisco Bay Area (no surprise there) this winter.  We walked to a Natural Organic Grocery and ordered it on tap, hah!  I'm not one for health fads, but I instantly fell in love with the extremely tangy taste.  I thought to myself that it's a good and acceptable way to get my fix when I crave vinegar or pickle juice, he-he.  So imagine my excitement when Sandra of Melody Lane Coop offered to teach Kombucha making.  Since I am a fan for all things DIY (do-it-yourself), I trekked to Roswell that fateful Thursday amidst rush hour.  Plus I hate to pay $4 a pop for a bottle or $10 for a 64 oz. growler at Whole Foods.
