| The Appalachian Community Fund Announces New Executive Director
The Board of Directors of the Appalachian Community Fund(ACF) is proud to announce their decision to place the leadership and ongoing development of ACF in the hands of Margo Miller. Miller will be stepping into the position of executive director, held by Gaye Evans for 14 years. Miller has served as the development director of ACF for the past three years, and as the interim director since Gaye's departure in June of 2011. In her time as development director she raised more than $540,000 to support social justice work in Central Appalachia.
Miller is a daughter of Appalachia, born and raised in East Tennessee, grew up in Knoxville, graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in broadcast communications. Miller remained in Knoxville after graduation working as a community organizer, facilitator, project director and administrator for a number of key social justice organizations, including the Highlander Research and Education Center, the Southern Partnership Fund, Project Change, the Southern Rural Development Initiative, Amnesty International and the Kellogg Foundation.
In addition to these affiliations, Miller has worked extensively with cultural activism and artistic expression of Appalachia. Through her work with the Carpetbag Theatre, a professional, multigenerational ensemble group committed to keeping the black experience alive in American theater, and her involvement with national groups like Alternate ROOTS and the National Performance Network, Miller has developed a deep commitment to art as a powerful tool for organizing and uniting communities.

RSC Corner #5
Hello Rooters, A big 35th anniversary year thus far yes, and we plan to grow further here in the RSC program. First we consider all aspects of our organization grounded in the principles of community engagement and we would like to reach out to our fellow Rooters to broaden our reach and impact for 2012. In partnership with the Roots Office, Executive Committee and various workgroups RSC is interested in the cross pollination and development of our regions and rhizomes and this means you. We have so many pockets and collectives of membership throughout and beyond our service regions that the time has come for our program to get to the next level and really focus our resources so..If there are any individuals or rhizomes interested in localized programing around art-making, skill-shares, specialized themed programming, or arts & activism around social issues and change please reach out to your nearest RSC member, rhizome leader, or workgroup.
We are strategizing on a whole host of activities and points of entry for Rooters and extended communities to permeate the organization with the spirit, consciousness and camaraderie that comes with being a Rooter leading into the 2012 Annual Meeting and beyond. These engagements are not exclusive to business and work, sometimes you just want to have fun and we are certainly all for sustainable joy in these days and times.
Please stay tuned, there will be many mechanisms in place to engage the Resources for Social Change this coming year including a tour that works in total partnership with the rhizomes to bring some of our set programming and moreover develop the activities and agendas that are specific and near and dear to our members so as we reach out to you please reach back. Some quick steps to take that can serve the entire organization is more local organizing and resource mapping - identify the physical places to hold gatherings, like minded organizations, and most of all the skill sets of our fellow members and the desires of your immediate rhizomes. Report back and post regional activities to the website and fellow Rooters and if anyone has any raw ideas that we can start to develop for the potential "Tour" certainly start those conversations with us now. The "Tour" will be what we all as Rooters want it to be working in concert with your regional representatives and Excomm members so by all means, brainstorm, plan, action plan and implement so we can hit 2012 running in stride. I can't wait. Coming to a rhizome near you, see ya!!
Yours 'Rootly' Omari Fox- RSC Chairperson |
