Alternate ROOTS
October 2010
Member Profile: Nikki BrownNikki Brown

Nikki Brown is one of the newest members of the Executive Committee and an active member of one of our most vibrant organizations - SpiritHouse in Durham, NC.

About her service with the ExCom, her goals are to learn a lot and gain a lot of information from the more experienced ROOTS Members. Nikki says, "I'm also hoping to bring my special skill set to the table as an audio documentary maker and as an visual artist.  I'm also hoping to make the organization more accessible to a different group of people."

Today, Nikki brings us a wonderful video report about what the folks at SpiritHouse have been up to in the two months since the Annual Meeting.  Click here to watch "Down From the Mountain." Nikki's tells us about an inspiring new program with women from CAARE, as well as the launch of NOMMO, the Magical Power of the Spoken Word.

Alternate ROOTS Named One of the 17 Most Highly Effective Arts Nonprofits by Philanthropedia

In a recent issue, Philanthropedia ranked Alternate ROOTS one of seventeen
of the top arts organizations in the United States. A nationwide survey asked arts and culture professionals to name organizations that are the most effective, high impact organizations, and Alternate ROOTS was ranked number 12 out of the top 17.

Alternate ROOTS Executive Director, Carlton Turner, states, "It is a great honor to be acknowledged as one of the top non-profit arts and culture organizations by a group of our peers."

ROOTS is proud to extend a warm applause some of its longest running partners for also appearing on the list, including the National Performance Network (NPN), Fractured Atlas, and the National Association for Latino Arts and Culture (NALAC).

(We were also pleased that a number of the respondents especially commented on the helpful and informational nature of our newsletters!)

Race, Culture, and Aesthetics
Network of Ensemble Theaters Micro-Festival
Atlanta, GA
October 8-10, 2010

Congratulations to the Network of Ensemble Theaters for a successful first Micro-Festival. Alternate ROOTS was honored to partner with NET to engage a very attentive and thoughtful audience in a weekend-long conversation about race, culture, and aesthetics.

Thank you to Youth Ensemble of Atlanta, Progress Theater, Out of Hand Theater, and Teo Castellanos for providing us all with thought-provoking, boundary-pushing performances, rigorous workshops,  and material for discussions that lasted for hours.  In short, it was an amazing weekend.

Be on the lookout for the next two events in this cycle. They will be held in Los Angeles in December, and in Philadelphia in February.

Alternate ROOTS Recognizes
Its Individual Donors 2002-2010

ROOTS wishes to acknowledge the incredible support, commitment, and dedication over the past eight years of the following donors who've generously played a role in the financial stability of Alternate ROOTS since its founding thirty-four years ago. As you know, we're getting our records in order.  So if, by chance, we have accidentally left your name from our list, please send us an email so we can acknowledge your generous donation in our next donor recognition campaign in the spring. Thank you again for your wonderful support over the years!

House Parties
Sunday, November 7
Hot Springs, NC
Hosted by Camille Shafer

Saturday, November 13
Atlanta, GA
Hosted by D. Patton White

Participants at Margo Miller's kickoff house party in Knoxville, September 18, had a great time, sharing their talents of spoken word, song, dance, hula hooping, and much more.  The event was as much a friend-raiser as it was a fund-raiser.  We're looking forward to the house parties coming up next.
