Capacity Building: Next Generation Arts Spaces
On April 26, staff members
Carlton Turner, Keryl McCord, and board chair, Ashley Sparks gathered in New
York City with representatives from nine other organizations to participate in
the Capacity Building: Next Generation
Arts Spaces pilot program. This program is part of the Ford Foundation's
new initiative of Supporting Diverse Arts
Spaces.
This gathering was the
introduction and the first of six face-to-face meetings, which will be led by
Michael Kaiser and the staff at the Kennedy Center Arts Management Institute.
The meeting was held at the historic La Mama Experimental Theatre in the East
Village. Subsequent meetings will be hosted by other members of the cohort and
will focus on fundraising, marketing, strategic planning, artistic planning,
and board development. This program is a two-year initiative that will also
include webinars and conference calls to build on the six site meetings. In
addition, Michael Kaiser will make a site visit to each of the participating
organizations.
Alternate ROOTS is honored
to be included in this opportunity and looks forward to sharing the accumulated
information with our members.

United States Social Forum June 22 - 26, 2010 Detroit, Michigan
On June 22, 2010 more than a dozen
members of Alternate ROOTS will converge on Detroit, Michigan for the United
States Social Forum. This forum will pick up where the last one ended, with
more than 10,000 already registered, more than 1000 workshops, 50 PMA (People
Movement Assemblies), and more than 200 artists performing. The USSF will be a national stage on
which global citizens will strategize to produce sustainable social reforms in
education, transportation, employment, immigration and environmental issues.
Grown in part from the lessons of the World Social Forum process that began in
Porto Alegre Brazil in 2001 as civil society's alternative to the annual World
Economic Forums in Davos, the USSF is arguably the largest non-partisan
political event in the country. The second United States Social Forum (USSF)
will attract organizers, activists, artists and others to build housing and
mobile computer labs, create urban gardens, and take actions to generate
dramatic change. The USSF is designed to both support the replication of these
movements on a nation-wide scale, and create a space where movements from
across the country and international allies can converge and learn from one
another. Attendees will participate in workshops, demonstrations and public
actions that will lay the groundwork for continuing local and national change. For more information and registration,
visit www.ussf2010.org or call 877-515-8773.

Announcement ROOTS
Fest 2011 Many communities, One Voice From June 22 through 26, 2011 artists,
cultural organizers, youth, activists, educators, and invested citizens from
across the country will celebrate Alternate ROOTS' 35th anniversary
and shine a national spotlight on the community of West Baltimore, MD.
This event will be more than just a big
party - although it will be a really big party - it will be an opportunity to
examine the ability of arts to build, and in some cases rebuild, community. In
this case the community will reclaim a poorly conceived highway project,
locally termed the "Highway to Nowhere", that turned one of the most vibrant
communities in the city into an abandoned urban landscape with very few
economic opportunities. Since 2008, members of
the Resources for Social Change program have been meeting with Ashley Milburn and CultureWorks in Baltimore to advance that organization's vision of
rebuilding their community through art and culture. RSC has made a long-term
investment in that community and the festival is one manifestation of this
commitment. CultureWorks will act as the local anchor to host the festival. One of the most
important parts of the festival will be the three-day Community Learning
Exchange that will precede the street festival. It will explore arts as an
indicator of the resiliency of a community and its ability to advance through
manmade and natural disasters. We ask you to save
these dates on your calendar and plan to come to Baltimore and celebrate with
Alternate ROOTS, the citizens of west Baltimore, and the entire community-based
arts field. We hope to see you there.
