35 Years of ROOTS = FESTIVAL!
Ashley Sparks, Chair

indian land

35 Years of grassroots arts-based community change is something to be celebrated and 35 years of ROOTS is something to be honored. The creative and dynamic leadership of the ROOTS Executive Committee (Ex Com) covered a lot of ground at our recent meeting in New Orleans and made some exciting decisions. We dreamed forward to vision the celebration of ROOTS 35th Anniversary in 2011 and came to consensus about producing a Festival.

In 2010 for the 34th Annual Meeting we are partnering with the National Association of Latino Arts and Culture on the theme, "The Aesthetics of Diversity."  Our 2011 Festival will be building on this theme as we hold a large-scale festival and a small-scale Annual Meeting - More Art and Less Business might be the mantra for the meeting that year! There was excitement in the room as we brainstormed all the things we are hoping this festival may do: be completely "Green," bring significant resources to a Southern city, highlight the best of Southern Artists, be multi-disciplinary-cultural-lingual-and-generational! We have a significant amount of work to do as we select a theme, city, partners, organizers, artists, and most importantly...menu. It wouldn't be a ROOTS event without great food!

ROOTS needs your vision, creativity, and organizing skills to create a festival that truly transforms! If you are interested in being a part of the planning process, please contact ashley@alternateroots.org.

Abundant Gratitude
Marcia Jones

Marcia JonesI would first like introduce myself by sharing that I have been a practicing Buddhist since I was 11 years old.  I grew up believing in and witnessing the phenomenal universal powers of chanting Nam myo ho renge kyo, a mantra so profound that many people would call extraordinary manifestations of spiritual mysticism  - became ordinary for me. It is my devotion to the Mystical Law that has guided and protected me throughout life.  It is also this practice that guided me to develop and articulate my artistic abilities- which is now profoundly synonymous to life. Life is Art and Art is Life read more...
School of the Americas Watch
Elise Witt

SOA WatchOn November 16, 1989, six Jesuit priests, their co-worker and her teenage daughter were massacred in El Salvador. A U.S. Congressional Task Force reported that those responsible were trained at the U.S. Army School of the Americas (SOA) at Ft. Benning, Georgia. The School of the Americas (SOA), in 2001 renamed the "Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation," is a combat training school for Latin American soldiers, located at Fort Benning, Georgia. Initially established in Panama in 1946, it was kicked out of that country in 1984 under the terms of the Panama Canal Treaty. Former Panamanian President, Jorge Illueca, stated that the School of the Americas was the "biggest base for destabilization in Latin America." The SOA, frequently dubbed the "School of Assassins," has left a trail of blood and suffering in every country where its graduates have returned. (read more)

This years' event will take place November 20-22 in Fort Benning, GA.

Opportunity for Touring Artists
APAP Conference NYC
Risk. Opportunity. Now.

January 8-12, 2010
New York City

Since 2006 the Association of Performing Arts Presenters has offered Alternate ROOTS space at its conference to represent artists from the Gulf Coast as its way of supporting the region devastated by Hurricane Katrina. At the 2010 conference, Alternate ROOTS will once again have the opportunity to represent touring artists in our region.

If you are interested in participating in the conference please contact the ROOTS staff. There is limited space available and Alternate ROOTS can only provide entrance to the conference for a very small number (ROOTS is not able to provide housing or travel).  If you go as one of the ROOTS participants, you will share time representing ROOTS at our booth in the EXPO hall.  Please plan for that when making your plans.

A little bit about the EXPO Hall.
The EXPO provides an opportunity to see some of the best of what the world has to offer. It is here so that you can find the artists that will attract and delight your audiences back home. The EXPO provides the largest international marketplace for those engaged in the field of presenting to stay on top of who is touring, who is developing new projects, when and where. With almost 400 exhibitors to speak with, there just isn't a better or a more efficient way to do business.

The APAP EXPO offers artists, managers and agents an unparalleled opportunity to meet buyers, sellers, presenting organizations, intermediaries, and others who collectively lead and fuel the presenting field. As the leading performing arts marketplace in the world, the APAP EXPO bristles with energy every open hour, making your presence there indispensable to getting the information you need to stay on the edge when it's time to conduct business.
